The team competed in Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Europa League. In Serie A Napoli enjoyed an immense season, finishing in 2nd place and having been in 1st place for much of the mid-season period. Star striker Gonzalo Higuaín became the player with the most goals in a single season in all of Serie A history, with 36 goals, overtaking Gunnar Nordahl's long-standing record of 35. Napoli were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia by Inter. In the UEFA Europa League, Napoli finished with a perfect 6–0–0 record in the group stage, scoring 22 goals in the process. However, this form did not continue into the knockout phase, where they were eliminated in the round of 32, 2–1 on aggregate by Spanish side and eventual semi-finalists Villarreal. On 25 May 2015 coach Rafael Benítez was signed by Real Madrid to replace Carlo Ancelotti. Former Empoli manager Maurizio Sarri replaced Benítez on 12 June.http://www.thesirenssong.com/2015/6/6/8741495/report-maurizio-sarri-has-signed-and-is-planning-summer-transfers Report: Maurizio Sarri has signed and is planning summer transfers Conor Dowley The Siren's Song 2015-07-03 2016-03-04 https://web.archive.org/web/20160304080512/http://www.thesirenssong.com/2015/6/6/8741495/report-maurizio-sarri-has-signed-and-is-planning-summer-transfers dead Players Squad information 2 February 2016http://www.sscnapoli.it/web/listplayer.aspx#&slider1=1 Team live 1 July 2015 https://web.archive.org/web/20130403022101/http://www.sscnapoli.it:80/web/listplayer.aspx 2013-04-03 1 BRA GK Rafael 2 ALB DF Elseid Hysaj 3 CRO DF Ivan Strinić 5 BRA MF Allan 6 ITA MF Mirko Valdifiori 7 ESP FW José Callejón 8 ITA MF Jorginho 9 ARG FW Gonzalo Higuaín 11 ITA DF Christian Maggio vice-captain 14 BEL FW Dries Mertens 17 SVK MF Marek Hamšík captain 18 ITA DF Vasco Regini 19 ESP MF David López 20 ITA MF Jacopo Dezi 21 ROM DF Vlad Chiricheș 22 BRA GK Gabriel on loan from Milan 23 ITA FW Manolo Gabbiadini 24 ITA FW Lorenzo Insigne 25 ESP GK Pepe Reina 26 SEN DF Kalidou Koulibaly 31 ALG DF Faouzi Ghoulam 33 ESP DF Raúl Albiol 77 MAR MF Omar El Kaddouri 94 ENG MF Nathaniel Chalobah on loan from Chelsea 96 ITA DF Sebastiano Luperto Transfers In Date Pos.
