The tournament was held in Japan from 11 to 21 December 2008. Defending champions Milan did not qualify, having been eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League. The winners of that competition, Manchester United, won the Club World Cup for the first time, beating Gamba Osaka 5–3 in the semi-finals before a 1–0 win over LDU Quito in the final at the International Stadium in Yokohama on 21 December. It was United's second world title, following the 1999 Intercontinental Cup, which was also held in Japan. It was also the first edition in which the CONMEBOL representative did not hail from either Argentina or Brazil. The fifth-place match, dropped for the 2007 tournament, was reintroduced for 2008, with the total prize money being increased by US$500,000 to US$16.5 million. The winners took away US$5 million, the losing finalists US$4 million, the third-placed team US$2.5 million, the fourth-placed team US$2 million, the fifth-placed team US$1.5 million, the sixth-placed team US$1 million and the seventh-placed team US$500,000.https://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/organisation/media/newsid=711059.html Organising committee approves tournament format with reintroduction of match for fifth place FIFA 12 March 2008 13 December 2008 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20080314224518/http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/organisation/media/newsid%3D711059.html 14 March 2008 Host bids On 13 August 2007, the Organising Committee for the FIFA Club World Cup recommended to the FIFA Executive Committee that Japan should host the 2008 tournament.http://fifa.com/clubworldcup/organisation/media/newsid%3D570740.html Organising Committee strengthens FIFA Club World Cup format FIFA 14 August 2007 28 December 2022 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20071011160129/http://fifa.com/clubworldcup/organisation/media/newsid=570740.html 11 October 2007 This was approved by the executive committee on 29 October 2007 during their meeting in Zürich, Switzerland.http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/administration/releases/newsid%3D625122.html Rotation ends in 2018 FIFA 29 October 2007 28 December 2022 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20081023200129/http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/administration/releases/newsid=625122.html 23 October 2008 Qualified teams World 600 right Location of teams of the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup World -34.9075 138.568889 80 Adelaide United left World 30.069114 31.312333 80 Al Ahly right World 34.810331 135.542752 80 Gamba Osaka right World 53.463056 -2.291389 80 Manchester United right World 20.10514 -98.75611 80 Pachuca right World -36.8001 174.5957 80 Waitakere United left World -0.107717 -78.489103 80 LDU Quito right TeamConfederationQualificationParticipationEntering in the semi-finalsENG Manchester UnitedUEFAWinners of the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League2nd (Previous: 2000)ECU LDU QuitoCONMEBOLWinners of the 2008 Copa LibertadoresDebutEntering in the quarter-finalsEGY Al AhlyCAFWinners of the 2008 CAF Champions League3rd (Previous: 2005, 2006)JPN Gamba OsakaAFCWinners of the 2008 AFC Champions LeagueDebutMEX PachucaCONCACAFWinners of the 2008 CONCACAF Champions' Cup2nd (Previous: 2007)Entering in the play-off for quarter-finalsAUS Adelaide UnitedAFC (host)note Adelaide United Adelaide United took the host Japan's slot as Gamba Osaka won the 2008 AFC Champions League.
