The defeat also ensured that there would be a new Australian Open finalist in the bottom half, as neither player from the opposing quarter-final (David Ferrer and Tomáš Berdych) had reached the final before. Berdych beat Ferrer in four sets to reach his first Australian Open semi-final and became the latest player to have reached at least the semi-finals of all four majors.https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/australian-open-2014-tomas-berdych-beats-third-seed-david-ferrer-to-progress-to-last-four-in-9073784.html https://ghostarchive.org/archive/20220501/https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/australian-open-2014-tomas-berdych-beats-third-seed-david-ferrer-to-progress-to-last-four-in-9073784.html 2022-05-01 subscription Australian Open 2014: Tomas Berdych beats third seed David Ferrer to 21 January 2014 The Independent 13 February 2020 Day 9 attendance: Seeds out: Men's Singles: SRB Novak Djokovic [2], ESP David Ferrer [3] Women's Singles: SRB Ana Ivanovic [14], ITA Flavia Pennetta [28] Men's Doubles: PHI Treat Huey / GBR Dominic Inglot [12] Women's Doubles: ZIM Cara Black / IND Sania Mirza [6], CZE Andrea Hlaváčková / CZE Lucie Šafářová [7] Mixed Doubles: GER Anna-Lena Grönefeld / AUT Alexander Peya [1], CZE Andrea Hlaváčková / BLR Max Mirnyi [4] Schedule of Play Matches on main courtsMatches on Rod Laver Arena Event Winner Loser ScoreWomen's Singles QuarterfinalsCHN Li Na [4]ITA Flavia Pennetta [28]6–2, 6–2Women's Singles QuarterfinalsCAN Eugenie Bouchard [30]SRB Ana Ivanovic [14]5–7, 7–5, 6–2Men's Singles QuarterfinalsCZE Tomáš Berdych [7]ESP David Ferrer [3]6–1, 6–4, 2–6, 6–4Men's Singles QuarterfinalsSUI Stanislas Wawrinka [8]SRB Novak Djokovic [2]2–6, 6–4, 6–2, 3–6, 9–7Men's Doubles QuarterfinalsCAN Daniel Nestor [8] SRB Nenad Zimonjić [8]AUS Alex Bolt [WC] AUS Andrew Whittington [WC]6–2, 7–6(7–1)Matches on Margaret Court Arena Event Winner Loser ScoreMen Legends' Doubles Round RobinSWE Jonas Björkman SWE Thomas EnqvistFRA Guy Forget FRA Henri Leconte6–3, 7–6(10–8)Mixed Doubles 2nd RoundCHN Zheng Jie USA Scott LipskyGER Anna-Lena Grönefeld [1] AUT Alexander Peya [1]2–6, 7–6(7–5), [10–5]Women's Doubles QuarterfinalsRUS Ekaterina Makarova [3] RUS Elena Vesnina [3]CZE Andrea Hlaváčková [7] CZE Lucie Šafářová [7]6–2, 2–6, 7–6(7–4)Women's Doubles QuarterfinalsITA Sara Errani [1] ITA Roberta Vinci [1]ZIM Cara Black [6] IND Sania Mirza [6]6–2, 3–6, 6–4Women's Doubles QuarterfinalsCZE Květa Peschke [4] SLO Katarina Srebotnik [4]AUS Jarmila Gajdošová [PR] CRO Ajla Tomljanović [PR]7–5, 4–6, 6–4Colored background indicates a night match Matches start at 11:00 am; night matches do not start before 7:00 pm Day 10 (January 22) Roger Federer became the first man to reach 11 consecutive semifinals at the Australian Open following his four-set victory over Andy Murray in the quarterfinals. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/australianopen/10590666/Andy-Murray-sent-packing-by-a-fast-and-furious-Roger-Federer-in-Australian-Open-quarter-final.html Andy Murray sent packing by a fast and furious Roger Federer in Australian Open quarter-final 22 January 2014 Daily Telegraph 23 January 2014https://www.bbc.com/sport/0/tennis/25805085 Andy Murray loses to Roger Federer in Australian Open Piers Newbery BBC Sport 22 January 2014 22 January 2014 Victoria Azarenka lost to Agnieszka Radwańska, ending a seven match winning streak over Radwańska and an eighteen match winning streak at the event. In winning the first set, Wawrinka was down 0–40 while serving for it at 5–3, but Nadal was unable to return any of Wawrinka's next five serves, which proved to be Wawrinka's 34th consecutive successful hold of serve. In the second set, Wawrinka broke in the opening game and held his own serve to lead 2–0, before Nadal sustained a back injury and needed a medical timeout. Wawrinka comfortably won the set as commentators speculated that Nadal may have been considering forfeiting the match and was seen to be in tears during changeovers. Nadal continued and won the third set, despite facing 15–40 in the first game on his own serve and also facing 15–40 while serving for the set at 5–3, as Wawrinka appeared to be suffering from nerves. Wawrinka won the match in the fourth set by winning the last eight points without reply. Pete Sampras awarded Wawrinka the trophy. This was the first time since Sergi Bruguera's 1993 French Open win that the winner of a Grand Slam men's event beat both number one and two seeds to clinch the championship; Wawrinka also became the first player to beat both Djokovic and Nadal in the same grand slam.https://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/27/sports/tennis/wawrinka-defeats-an-ailing-nadal-to-win-australian-open.html A Bizarrely Fitting Finale Yields a Most Unexpected Champion Greg Bishop 26 January 2014 13 February 2020 NYTimes.comhttps://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/tennis/2014/01/26/nadal-losing-wawrinka-australian-open-final/4911881/ Stan Wawrinka wins Australian Open over hobbled Rafael Nadal Douglas Robson USA TODAY 13 February 2020EuroSport2 broadcast. 26 January 2014 For Wawrinka, it was his first career Grand Slam title.
