1902 South Carolina Gamecocks football team

American college football season February 2026 August 2023 1902 South Carolina Gamecocks football Independent 6–1 Bob Williams 1st Thomas E. McCutchen The 1902 South Carolina Jaguars football team represented South Carolina College—now known as the University of South Carolina–as an independent during the 1902 college football season. Led by first-year head coach Bob Williams, South Carolina compiled a record of 6–1. South Carolina's upset over rival Clemson gave rise to two traditions associated with the university: its mascot and the "Tiger Burn". In excitement over the win, some Carolina students began parading around with a drawing of a crowing gamecock over a beaten tiger, as cockfighting was still widespread in the early 1900s. Offended by the sign, several hundred Clemson cadets marched on South Carolina College, armed with weapons. The situation was resolved peacefully by faculty and police, with the sign being burned. The burning of the sign marked the start of the "Tiger Burn" tradition, and the name of the team changed to the South Carolina Gamecocks.https://www.academia.edu/1578479 The South Carolina – Clemson Football War of 1902 Nauright JohnCarolina vs. Clemson https://sc.edu/uofsc/posts/2023/11/carolina-clemson-rivalry-for-the-ages.php 2024-09-05 University of South Carolina enThe journey of our in-state rivalry https://sc.edu/uofsc/posts/2016/11/rivalry_week.php 2024-09-05 University of South Carolina enWhy are we Gamecocks? https://sc.edu/uofsc/posts/2020/01/podcast-why-are-we-gamecocks.php 2024-09-05 University of South Carolina en Schedule October 15 w 1902 Guilford Quakers Guilford Columbia, SC 10–0 October 21 w y North Carolina Medical College Columbia, SC 60–0 October 25 w Bingham Military Columbia, SC 28–0 October 30 w Clemson Columbia, SC rivalry 12–6 5,000 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/5151082/the_atlanta_constitution/ Atlanta Constitution Morning Game Was Jonah To Clemson At Columbia May 3, 2016 Newspapers.com October 31, 1902 2 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/5169647/the_charlotte_observer/ Charlotte Observer Carolina Defeats Clemson October 31, 1902 5 May 5, 2016 Newspapers.com November 6 w St. Albans Columbia, SC 5–0 November 14 l y Furman University Grounds Greenville, SC 0–10 Furman defeats South Carolina https://www.newspapers.com/clip/96901706/furman-defeats-south-carolina/ The Atlanta Constitution November 15, 1902 March 4, 2022 Newspapers.com November 28 w Charleston Medical College Columbia, SC 80–0 http://www.databasefootball.com/college/teams/teamyear.htm?TeamID=89&Season=1902 South Carolina Season Schedule - databaseFootball.com/NCAA January 30, 2016 usurped https://web.archive.org/web/20151130215419/http://www.databasefootball.com/College/teams/teamyear.htm?TeamID=89&Season=1902 November 30, 2015 Roster The following players were members of the 1902 football team according to the roster published in the 1902 and 1903 editions of The Garnet and Black, the South Carolina yearbook. The Garnet and Black http://library.sc.edu/digital/collections/garnetAndBlack/gb1903.pdf The Garnet and Black 1902 1902 75 May 27, 2018 SCC Fighting Gamecocks 1902 rosterQuarterback Lee McGhee Guards McCutchen (Capt.)
