The 1994 Bolivia earthquake occurred on June 8, 1994, at 20:33 local time. The epicenter was located in a sparsely populated region in the Amazon jungle, 55 km mi NNW of Reyes, Bolivia.
The Harvard CMT Project assigned it a focal depth of 647 km, while USGS assigned it a depth of 631.3 km. Both assigned it a magnitude W y of 8.2, making it, at the time, the largest earthquake since the 1977 Sumba earthquake, before being surpassed less than 4 months later by an 8.3 W y earthquake in the Kuril Islands.Latest Earthquakes https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=-89.98728,-95.625&extent=89.98696,457.03125&range=search&timeZone=utc&map=false&search=%7B%22name%22:%22Search%20Results%22,%22params%22:%7B%22starttime%22:%221970-01-01%2000:00:00%22,%22endtime%22:%222000-01-01%2000:00:00%22,%22minmagnitude%22:8.2,%22orderby%22:%22time%22%7D%7D 2025-08-10 earthquake.usgs.gov It is also tied with the August 19, 2018 Fiji Earthquake as the second largest ever earthquake recorded deep focus earthquake (where the focal depth exceeds 300 km), only behind the 2013 Okhotsk Sea earthquake, while also being the largest in South America.Latest Earthquakes https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=-68.33438,-97.73438&extent=33.43144,-28.65234&range=search&sort=largest&timeZone=utc&map=false&search=%7B%22name%22:%22Search%20Results%22,%22params%22:%7B%22starttime%22:%22100-01-01%2000:00:00%22,%22endtime%22:%222025-06-01%2000:00:00%22,%22maxlatitude%22:12.855,%22minlatitude%22:-58.324,%22maxlongitude%22:-31.992,%22minlongitude%22:-94.57,%22minmagnitude%22:7.35,%22mindepth%22:300,%22orderby%22:%22magnitude%22%7D%7D 2025-08-10 earthquake.usgs.gov
Description
The rupture was located within the Nazca plate where it is being subducted beneath the mantle of the South American continent.Scientists Get a Closer Look at Mechanism of Deep Bolivian Quake J. Such deep events are known as intraplate earthquakes because they occur within a tectonic lithosphere rather than at the boundary of two. The earthquake involved a particularly narrow slip area of 30 km by 50 km. In 22 seconds, the rupture propagated with a velocity of 1.5 km per second, which is slower than the average rupture velocity of earthquakes.Zhan Zhongwen Kanamori Hiroo Tsai Victor C. A geologist with the US Geological Survey described the effects in Los Angeles, California, as a "very gentle motion". Similar effects were observed in Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Minneapolis, and Omaha in the United States.
