The 1998 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 127th Open Championship, held from 16 to 19 July at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. In weekend wind and rain, Mark O'Meara won his second major championship of the year and first Open Championship in a playoff over Brian Watts, the 54-hole leader.https://www.si.com/vault/1998/07/27/246655/double-major-in-a-wildly-entertaining-british-open-that-saw-three-breathtaking-72nd-hole-finishes-and-a-playoff-unflappable-mark-omeara-won-his-second-major-in-three-months Sports Illustrated Garrity John Double major 27 July 1998https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=Tt1YAAAAIBAJ&sjid=resDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6072%2C5413516 Eugene Register-Guard Oregon Associated Press Ferguson Doug O'Meara on the mark again 20 July 1998 1Bhttps://news.google.com/newspapers?id=1uZRAAAAIBAJ&sjid=2G8DAAAAIBAJ&pg=5254%2C7454582 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Parascenzo Marino Major Mark 20 July 1998 B-1https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=zMQdAAAAIBAJ&sjid=xr4EAAAAIBAJ&pg=4846%2C6772801 Sarasota Herald-Tribune Florida Associated Press Ferguson Doug British Open all American 20 July 1998 1C
Three months earlier, O'Meara won the Masters on the final green by sinking a 20 ft 0 on birdie putt. At age 41, he became the oldest player to win two majors in a year: Jack Nicklaus (1980), Ben Hogan (1953), and Craig Wood (1941) were all age forty. (Hogan won three majors and turned 41 two weeks after the third.) This was also the first major championship since the 1961 PGA Championship in which Nicklaus was not in the field.
At the previous Open at Royal Birkdale seven years earlier in 1991, O'Meara was a co-leader after 54 holes, shot 69, and tied for third.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=lUdWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=1OoDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6136%2C4896309 Eugene Register-Guard Oregon (Los Angeles Times) Baker-Finch bags Open title 22 July 1991 D1
