It was the club's 103rd season; and their 26th consecutive season in the top flight. The club was managed by Paul Lambert, in his second season in charge.Aston Villa appoint Paul Lambert from Norwich City as new boss https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/18307066 BBC Sport 2 June 2012 22 May 2013 It was the last season in which Aston Villa did not receive a single red card.Season Stats Player IQ AVDB https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/aston-villa/players/cards/red/season 2026-09-03 www.avfchistory.co.uk Lambert's side began the season brightly, with a 3–1 win over Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on 17 August.https://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/23644714 Arsenal 1–3 Aston Villa BBC Sport Towards the end of 2013, the performances worsened greatly, especially home form, and Lambert was criticised by many fans and pundits for putting out a counter-attacking side with no plan B. Possession stats were biased towards the opposition in many games, including at home to Swansea; Villa had less than 30 per cent of possession in a game which ended 1–1. In the new year Villa lost 2–1 at home to Sheffield United, a team two divisions below them, marking the fourth consecutive year that Lambert has been eliminated from the FA Cup by lower league opposition. Lambert made headlines by claiming that "many Premier League clubs could do without the distraction of the FA Cup if they were being honest." He subsequently defended his comments, claiming they were "taken out of context."https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/25606163 Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert defends FA Cup stance BBC Sport 4 January 2014 There were debuts for Jack Grealish (185), Leandro Bacuna (116), Jores Okore (38), Libor Kozák (20), Jed Steer (19), Antonio Luna (17), Aleksandar Tonev (17), Ryan Bertrand (16), Grant Holt (10), Callum Robinson (4), Nicklas Helenius (3), and Janoi Donacien.https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/villa-seasons Aston Villa's Seasons AVFC History Pre-season The club announced its pre-season plans would begin with a tour of Germany. The rules included a cap on the number of players at 25; players under the age of 21 on 1 January of the year in which the season starts are exempt from the list of 25. A "home-grown rule" also requires clubs to name at least eight players in their squad of 25 players that have been registered domestically for a minimum of three seasons prior to their 21st birthday.https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/squad_profiles/default.stm Squad Profiles BBC Sport 22 May 2013Home-grown quota for Premier League http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/home-grown-quota-for-premier-league.html Premier League 10 August 2011 22 May 2013 2 May 2012 https://web.archive.org/web/20120502131751/http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/home-grown-quota-for-premier-league.html dead New Premier League squad rules explained https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/8858634.stm BBC Sport 27 July 2010 22 May 2013 Players under 21 do not need to be named and can still be used.
