Williams defeated four former and future world No. 1 players consecutively to win the title: her sister Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, and Muguruza. Petra Kvitová was the defending champion, but lost to Jelena Janković in the third round. Muguruza was the first Spaniard to reach the final since Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in 1996.
