"Coelosaurus" antiquus ("antique hollow lizard") is a dubious species of theropod dinosaurs. It was named by Joseph Leidy in 1865 for two tibiae found in the Navesink Formation of New Jersey.
This species was later reclassified as a member of the genus Ornithomimus in 1979 by Donald Baird and John R. Horner as Ornithomimus antiquus,Baird D. Horner J. 1979 Cretaceous dinosaurs of North Carolina Brimleyana 2 1–28 and this was followed by some later researchers.Sullivan Robert M. 1997 A juvenile Ornithomimus antiquus (Dinosauria: Theropoda: Ornithomimosauria), from the Upper Cretaceous Kirtland Formation (De-na-zin Member), San Juan Basin, New Mexico New Mexico Geological Society Guidebook, 48th Field Conference, Mesozoic Geology and Paleontology of the Four Corners Region 249–254 However, others have not followed this classification, and have noted that there is no justification for the classification of the New Jersey specimens in a genus known only from western North America. David Weishampel in 2004 considered "C." antiquus to be indeterminate among ornithomimosaurs, and therefore a nomen dubium.Weishampel D.B. 2004 http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/FAE/DBWpdf/R88_2006Weishampel.pdf Another Look at the Dinosaurs of the East Coast of North America https://web.archive.org/web/20120904224111/http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/FAE/DBWpdf/R88_2006Weishampel.pdf 2012-09-04 129–168 Actas de las III Jornadas Internacionales sobre Paleontología de Dinosaurios y su Entorno: Salas de los Infantes (Burgos, España), septiembre de 2004. In 1979, Baird and Horner discovered that the name "Coelosaurus" was preoccupied by another dubious taxon (based on a single vertebra), named Coelosaurus by an anonymous author now known to be Richard Owen in 1854.
Ornithomimid material known from the Severn Formation of Maryland and the Mooreville Chalk and Blufftown formations of Alabama and Georgia have also been assigned to this species.Brownstein Chase D. 2018-02-08 The biogeography and ecology of the Cretaceous non-avian dinosaurs of Appalachia https://palaeo-electronica.org/content/2018/2123-appalachia-biogeography Palaeontologia Electronica English 21 1 1–56 10.26879/801 1094-8074 free A specimen once assigned to Coelosaurus that was discovered in the Merchantville Formation of Delaware during the 1970s has since been assigned to "Cryptotyrannus".Doran Brownstein Chase 2021 Dinosaurs from the Santonian–Campanian Atlantic coastline substantiate phylogenetic signatures of vicariance in Cretaceous North America https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.210127 Royal Society Open Science 8 8 2021RSOS....810127D 10.1098/rsos.210127 2054-5703 8385347 34457333 210127 free
