Virginia defeated Santa Clara in the championship game in a penalty kick shootout (3–1) after the match ended in a 0–0 tie after four overtime periods. This was a re-match of the 1989 tournament final at Rutgers Stadium when both teams were crowned co-national champions (before the NCAA adopted penalty kick shootouts for settling tied games). The final match was played on December 8 at the USF Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Florida. All the other games were played at the home field of the higher seeded team.1991 Division I Men's Championship Bracket http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_soccer_RB/2011/D1Brackets.pdf NCAA NCAA.org December 20, 2012 31http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_soccer_champs_records/2012/D1/champs.pdf Men's soccer – Division I: History National Collegiate Athletic Association 2012-12-20 2014-10-15 https://web.archive.org/web/20141015070124/http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_soccer_champs_records/2012/D1/champs.pdf dead Qualifying 1991 NCAA Division I men's soccer season Five teams made their debut appearances in the NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament: Florida International, Furman, Hartford, UNC Charlotte, and Tulsa.
