The tournament was held in South Korea between 18 August and 9 September 2007. At that time, it was the second major FIFA tournament to have been held in the country, alongside the 2002 FIFA World Cup which South Korea co-hosted with Japan, and was also the third edition of the U-17 World Cup held in Asia, following China in 1985, and Japan in 1993.Executive Committee approves report from Task Force for the Good of the Game The amount of teams expanded from 16 to 24 since the previous edition of the U-17 World Cup. Also, from this edition onwards, the confederation which produced the last champion, in this case CONCACAF, had an extra spot in the qualifying rounds. Nigeria won their third title, defeating Spain on penalties in the final, and tied Brazil for the most championships in the tournament, with three each. Mexico were the defending champions, but they failed to qualify for the tournament as a whole.
