2008 UCI ProTour

Cycling competition 2008 UCI ProTour 4 UCI ProTour 22 January – 21 September Australia and Europe 15 Alejandro Valverde ESP GCE 2008 GCE 2008 Spain 2007 2009 (UCI ProTour) → 2009 (UCI World Ranking) The 2008 UCI ProTour is the fourth year of the UCI ProTour system. Following protracted disagreement between the organisers of the Grand Tours (ASO, RCS and Unipublic) and the UCI, all races organized by ASO, RCS and Unipublic were withdrawn from the ProTour calendar. This removed all three Grand Tours (Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España), four of the five monuments (Milan–San Remo, Paris–Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and Giro di Lombardia) and four further races (Paris–Nice, Tirreno–Adriatico, La Flèche Wallonne and Paris–Tours). As such, the quality of the races of the ProTour was diminished. The Australian race, the Tour Down Under was added to the calendar, making it the first race outside Europe on the ProTour (although races had previously been held outside Europe as part of the UCI Road World Cup). The highly successful DSC ceased operations at the end of the 2007 season. Johan Bruyneel signed on to become the directeur sportif and revamp the embattled AST 2008; joining him are 2007 Tour de France champion Alberto Contador and 2007 Tour of California champion Levi Leipheimer. Other major signings included American George Hincapie moving to THR 2008a and Daniele Bennati from LAM 2008 to LIQ 2008, while Giro d'Italia winner Danilo Di Luca left Liguigas for the UCI Professional Continental team LPR 2008. 2008 UCI ProTour races As of September 28, 2008.http://www.uciprotour.com/templates/UCI/UCI2/layout.asp?MenuId=MTUyODI 2008 UCI ProTour Races UCI 2008-08-31 https://web.archive.org/web/20081112181449/http://www.uciprotour.com/templates/UCI/UCI2/layout.asp?MenuId=MTUyODI 2008-11-12 dead DatesRaceWinnerProTour leader22–27 JanuaryAUS Tour Down UnderAndré Greipel GER(THR 2008a)André Greipel GER(THR 2008a)6 AprilBEL Tour of FlandersStijn Devolder BEL(QST 2008)7–12 AprilESP Vuelta al País VascoAlberto Contador ESP(AST 2008)9 AprilBEL Gent–WevelgemÓscar Freire ESP(RAB 2008)20 AprilNED Amstel Gold RaceDamiano Cunego ITA(LAM 2008)Damiano Cunego ITA(LAM 2008)29 April–4 MaySUI Tour de RomandieAndreas Klöden GER(AST 2008)19–25 MayESP Volta a CatalunyaGustavo César ESP(XAG 2008a)8–15 JuneFRA Dauphiné LibéréAlejandro Valverde ESP(GCE 2008)Cadel Evans AUS(SIL 2008)14–22 JuneSUI Tour de SuisseRoman Kreuziger CZE(LIQ 2008)Damiano Cunego ITA(LAM 2008)2 AugustESP Clásica de San SebastiánAlejandro Valverde ESP(GCE 2008)Alejandro Valverde ESP(GCE 2008)20–27 AugustBEL / NED Eneco Tour of BeneluxIván Gutiérrez ESP(GCE 2008)25 AugustFRA GP Ouest-FrancePierrick Fédrigo FRA(BBO 2008)29 August–6 SeptemberGER Deutschland TourLinus Gerdemann GER(THR 2008b)7 SeptemberGER Vattenfall CyclassicsRobbie McEwen AUS(SIL 2008)15–21 SeptemberPOL Tour de PologneJens Voigt GER(CSC 2008b) Teams As of 6 December 6, 2007http://www.uciprotour.com/Modules/ENews/ENewsDetails.asp?id=NTQwOQ&MenuId=MTY5Mw&BackLink=%2FTemplates%2FUCI%2FUCI5%2Flayout%2Easp%3FMenuID%3DMTY5Mw UCI Press release : UCI ProTour: 18 teams registered by the UCI 2007-12-04 2007-12-06 https://web.archive.org/web/20110716172601/http://www.uciprotour.com/Modules/ENews/ENewsDetails.asp?id=NTQwOQ&MenuId=MTY5Mw&BackLink=%2FTemplates%2FUCI%2FUCI5%2Flayout.asp%3FMenuID=MTY5Mw 2011-07-16 dead 2008 UCI ProTeams http://www.uciprotour.com/templates/UCI/UCI2/layout.asp?MenuId=MTY5Ng 2007-12-22 UCI https://web.archive.org/web/20071028121940/http://www.uciprotour.com/templates/UCI/UCI2/layout.asp?MenuId=MTY5Ng 2007-10-28 dead CodeOfficial Team NameCountryWebsite ALM ALM 2008 https://web.archive.org/web/20070521180907/http://www.ag2r-cyclisme.com/ 2007-05-21 AST AST 2008 BTL BBO 2008 GCE GCE 2008 COF COF 2008 C.A C.A 2008 CSC SAX 2008a SIL SIL 2008 EUS EUS 2008 FDJ FDJ 2008 https://web.archive.org/web/20070523232117/http://www.fdjeux.com/institutionnel/cyclisme/actualites/ 2007-05-23 GST GST 2008 LAM LAM 2008 LIQ LIQ 2008 MRM MRM 2008 QST QST 2008 RAB RAB 2008 SDV SDV 2008a THR THR 2008a https://web.archive.org/web/20200923140148/http://highroadsports.com/ 2020-09-23 Unibet.com Cycling Team, whose sponsors have pulled out of cycling, failed to submit its application renewal by the November 20, 2007 deadline.
