It was the 28th year of season play for Houston. The team was coached by 12th-year head coach Bill Yeoman who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001. The team played its home games in the Astrodome, a 50,000-person capacity stadium off-campus in Houston at the Astrodomain. Houston competed as a member of the NCAA in the University Division, independent of any athletic conference. It was their fourteenth year of doing so. The Cougars had been admitted to the Southwest Conference two years prior, but were ineligible for conference play until the 1976 season.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=fK9OAAAAIBAJ&sjid=twkEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2311,628663 Houston Joins Southwest Conference Star-News 1971-05-03 2012-06-21 After completion of the regular season, the Cougars were invited to the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl where they defeated the Tulane Green Wave.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=QegeAAAAIBAJ&sjid=eswEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5831,4541081 Cougars Rout Tulane 47–7 The Daytona Beach News-Journal 1973-12-30 2012-06-21 Schedule 1973 AP Central September 15 w 18 Rice Houston Astrodome Houston, TX rivalry 24–6 43,917 https://www.newspapers.com/article/waco-tribune-herald-cougars-abolish-owls/169058439/ Waco Tribune-Herald Cougars abolish Owls 24–6 September 16, 1973 March 28, 2025 Newspapers.com September 21 w 16 South Carolina Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 27–19 24,019 https://www.newspapers.com/article/victoria-advocate-cougars-outdistance-ga/139558231/ The Victoria Advocate Cougars outdistance Gamecocks, 27 to 19 September 22, 1973 January 25, 2024 Newspapers.com September 29 w y 15 Memphis State Memphis Memorial Stadium Memphis, TN 35–21 40,126 https://www.newspapers.com/article/longview-news-journal-cougars-upend-memp/170046132/ Longview Morning Journal Cougars upend Memphis September 30, 1973 April 10, 2025 Newspapers.com October 6 w y 14 San Diego State San Diego Stadium San Diego, CA 14–9 37,489 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-waco-news-tribune-houston-wins-149/170046232/ The Waco News-Tribune Houston wins 14–9 October 7, 1973 April 10, 2025 Newspapers.com October 12 w 14 Virginia Tech Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 54–27 27,103 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/90585662/cougars-glide-past-virginia-tech-5427/ Fort Worth Star-Telegram Cougars glide past Virginia Tech 54–27 October 14, 1973 December 14, 2021 Newspapers.com October 19 7:03 p.m. w y 14 Miami (FL) Miami Orange Bowl Miami, FL 30–7 29,340 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-odessa-american-houston-shatters-77/170046350/ The Odessa American Houston shatters 7–7 deadlock for win October 20, 1973 April 10, 2025 Newspapers.com October 27 l y 12 Auburn Jordan–Hare Stadium Auburn, AL 0–7 58,426 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-odessa-american-auburn-dumps-houston/134031657/ The Odessa American Auburn dumps Houston October 21, 1973 October 24, 2023 Newspapers.com November 3 w y 18 Florida State Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 34–3 27,587 https://www.newspapers.com/article/austin-american-statesman-parker-willin/170046453/ The Austin American-Statesman Parker, Willingham lead Cougar victory November 4, 1973 April 10, 2025 Newspapers.com November 10 w y 15 Colorado State Hughes Stadium Fort Collins, CO 28–20 17,532 https://www.newspapers.com/article/st-louis-post-dispatch-houston-dumps-co/156843923/ St. Louis Post-Dispatch Houston dumps Colorado State November 11, 1973 October 9, 2024 Newspapers.com November 24 w 14 Wyoming Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 35–0 18,441 https://www.newspapers.com/article/victoria-advocate-coogs-jolt-wyoming/156843144/ Victoria Advocate Coogs jolt Wyoming November 25, 1973 October 9, 2024 Newspapers.com December 1 w 14 Tulsa Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 35–16 21,500–21,590 https://www.newspapers.com/article/fort-worth-star-telegram-cougars-overtak/170046554/ Fort Worth Star-Telegram Cougars overtake Hurricane December 2, 1973 April 10, 2025 Newspapers.com December 29 w 14 Tulane 17 Houston Astrodome Houston, TX Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl ABC 47–7 44,358 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/36982951/hhj/ The Daily Advertiser D.C.
