The plans were to have the seven clubs split into two groups, with the group winners and the runners-up to advance to the semi-finals.Asian Club Competitions 1972 https://www.rsssf.org/tablesa/ascup72.html RSSSF 4 January 2018 However, Hong Kong Rangers were forced to withdraw after the draw due to logistical and financial issues. Later, Kuwaiti club Al-Qadsia and Lebanese club Racing Beirut both refused to commit to playing against Israeli club Maccabi Netanya for political reasons if the situation arose: the AFC excluded both clubs in response to prevent any repeat of Arab clubs forfeiting matches against Israeli clubs, which had occurred in a semi-final in 1970 and in a group match and the final in 1971. Consequently, only four teams were left to participate (two in each group), and the Football Federation of Iran informed the AFC that they no longer considered it viable to invest its half of the money and resources required for the tournament - including half of Maccabi, Korea University and Port Authority's flight expenses to and from Tehran - due to the likely heavy financial losses. On 2 April 1972, the AFC informed the remaining four teams that the tournament was postponed, and it was ultimately cancelled.דתייה טכנית מעוררת מהשבותJuly 2026 InternetArchiveBot Davar, 9 April 1972, Page 9, Historical Jewish Press he Participants The seven clubs originally scheduled to participate were:Maccabi Netanya players are about to go to the Asian Championship in Tehran https://web.archive.org/web/20221213010810/https://www.nli.org.il/en/newspapers/?a=is&oid=dav19720402-01.2.119&type=nlilogicalsectionpdf&e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7CtxTI--------------1 2022-12-13 Davar, 2 April 1972, Page 10, Historical Jewish Press he Teams:TeamQualifying methodHong Kong 1959 Hong Kong Rangers1970–71 Hong Kong First Division League championsIran 1964 Persepolis1971–72 Local League championsIsrael Maccabi Netanya1970–71 Liga Leumit championsKuwait Al-Qadsia1970–71 Kuwaiti Premier League championsLebanon Racing Beirut1969–70 Lebanese Premier League championsKOR 1949 Korea University1971 Korean National Football Championship championsThailand Port Authority of Thailand1972 Kor Royal Cup champions Teams location AFC 900 center Location of the 1972 Asian Champion Club Tournament planned teams8px Red: Group A; 8px Blue: Group B AFC 22.356139 114.107479 90 Hong Kong Rangers Red pog.svg right AFC 35.710278 51.427500 90 Persepolis Blue pog.svg left AFC 32.333939 34.862197 90 Maccabi Netanya Red pog.svg right AFC 29.340000 48.030278 90 Al-Qadsia Blue pog.svg right AFC 33.987611 35.638639 90 Racing Beirut Blue pog.svg right AFC 37.589167 127.032222 90 Korea University Red pog.svg left AFC 13.715106 100.559674 90 Port Authority of Thailand Blue pog.svg left right Groups The draw for the groups had split the seven teams into two groups (one group of three, one group of four) prior to the tournament's cancellation, with the top two from each group to advance to the semi-finals.
