Road cycling competitions 2012 UCI World Tour 2 UCI World Tour 17 January – 13 October Europe, Canada, Australia and China 29 Joaquim Rodríguez KAT 2012 SKY 2012 Spain 2011 2013 The 2012 UCI World Tour was the fourth edition of the ranking system launched by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 2009. The series started with the Tour Down Under's opening stage on 17 January, and consisted of 14 stage races, 14 one-day races, and one team time trial (which only counted towards the team rankings). The Tour of Hangzhou which was originally included in the list of races was postponed until 2013.http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/uci-postpones-tour-of-hangzhou UCI Postpones Tour Of Hangzhou Cyclingnews.com 2012-08-28 __TOC__ Teams The 18 UCI ProTeams competed in the World Tour, with UCI Professional Continental teams, or national squads, able to enter at the discretion of the organisers of each event. The ProTeams, which were obliged to take part in all 29 events, were: GEC 2012a (known as GEC 2012b from May onwards) was a new team, while FDJ 2012 regained ProTour status, which it lost for the previous season. These teams replaced THR 2011, which folded after 21 years, and RSH 2011, which largely merged with LEO 2011 to form LEO 2012. A change in sponsorship saw QSI 2011 become QSI 2012, while 2011's OLO 2011 became OLO 2012. Two teams each changed their names twice to reflect changes of sponsorship: SAX 2012a reverting to its previous name, having been known as SAX 2011 in 2011, before becoming SAX 2012b in June; while the serial addition of new sponsors gave rise to the names GRM 2012a and GRM 2012b. Events All 27 events from the 2011 UCI World Tour were included, and E3 Harelbeke, a one-day race in Belgium, and the World Team Trial Championships, were added.http://www.uci.ch/Modules/ENews/ENewsDetails2011.asp?id=ODM3OA&MenuId=MTI2Mjc&LangId=1&BackLink=%2Ftemplates%2FUCI%2FUCI7%2Flayout%2Easp%3FMenuId%3DMTI2Mjc%26LangId%3D1 UCI WorldTour licence for
