China shot first, and Xie Huilin scored, only to be matched by the United States' Carla Overbeck. In the second round, Qiu Haiyan's goal was matched by Joy Fawcett. Liu Ying was China's third-round shooter, but her shot was saved by United States goalkeeper Briana Scurry. Despite Scurry coming well off her line (a violation that should have resulted in a re-kick for Liu), the save stood. Kristine Lilly then got a shot past Chinese goalkeeper Gao Hong to give the United States the advantage. Zhang Ouying, Mia Hamm, and Sun Wen each converted their penalty opportunities, leaving the United States' Brandi Chastain with a shot to win the tournament. She put the ball past Gao, leading to an ecstatic celebration by the Americans, who had clinched the title on home soil.Faison Seth July 12, 1999 The View From China: 'So Close, So Close' https://www.nytimes.com/1999/07/12/sports/women-s-world-cup-the-view-from-china-so-close-so-close.html The New York Times October 30, 2012Reynolds Charles https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-america-in-love-and-having-a-ball-1105539.html https://ghostarchive.org/archive/20220501/https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-america-in-love-and-having-a-ball-1105539.html May 1, 2022 subscription Football: America in love and having a ball - Sport The Independent July 10, 1999 October 30, 2012Gee Alison July 13, 2014 Why Women's World Cup champion Brandi Chastain bared her bra https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-27189681 BBC Sport July 28, 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20190331065448/https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-27189681 March 31, 2019 live Details 1999 7 10 12:50 PDT (UTC−7) USA 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup knockout stage#Final 0–0 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup final yes https://web.archive.org/web/20220407125348/https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/womens/womensworldcup/usa1999/match-center/22183 CHN Rose Bowl, Pasadena 90,185 Nicole Petignat (Switzerland) *Overbeck Fawcett Lilly Hamm Chastain 5–4 * Xie Huilin Qiu Haiyan Liu Ying Zhang Ouying Sun Wen _drkredhoop _collaronwhite _drkredhoop FFFFFF A01D0E FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF United StatesDiCicco Tony https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/docs/dicicco/tonydiciccoMay2000.pdf How they won the cup unitedsoccercoaches.org United Soccer Coaches 2 May 2000 January 5, 2018 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20180906090358/https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/docs/dicicco/tonydiciccoMay2000.pdf September 6, 2018July 10, 1999 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup – Final Television production Pasadena, California ABC Sports American Broadcasting Company _chinaPR99 _chinaPR99 _whitetop FF0000 FF0000 FF0000 FF0000 FF0000 China PR GK 1 Briana ScurryRB 14Joy FawcettCB 4 Carla Overbeck (c)CB 20Kate SobreroLB 6 Brandi ChastainDM 10Michelle Akers 74 91CM 11Julie FoudyCM 13Kristine LillyRW 9 Mia HammCF 12Cindy Parlow 57LW 16Tiffeny Milbrett 115Substitutions:MF 8 Shannon MacMillan 57MF 7 Sara Whalen 91MF 15Tisha Venturini 115Manager:Tony DiCicco300px GK 18Gao HongRB 11Pu Wei 59CB 12Wen LirongCB 3 Fan YunjieLB 14Bai JieRM 2 Wang LipingCM 10Liu Ailing 80CM 13Liu YingLM 6 Zhao Lihong 114CF 9 Sun Wen (c)CF 8 Jin Yan 119Substitutions:FW 7 Zhang Ouying 70 59MF 15Qiu Haiyan 114DF 5 Xie Huilin 119Manager:Ma Yuanan Assistant referees: Ghislaine Labbe (France) Ana Pérez (Peru) Fourth official: Katriina Elovirta (Finland) Post-match The United States became the first team to win two Women's World Cup titles.Jones Grahame L.
