Alongside competing in the Third Division, the club also participated in the FA Cup and the League Cup. A mid-season managerial change saw Benny Fenton leave for Leyton Orient and ex-England international Neil Franklin arrive from APOEL. They finished the season in 17th-place and had a good run in the League Cup, seeing off First Division Fulham in the first round, and then Second Division Northampton Town in the second round, before being knocked out in the third round by Fourth Division side Workington. Colchester made the second round of the FA Cup but were beaten by Queens Park Rangers. Season overview The 1963–64 season proved to be one of change for Colchester United. Benny Fenton left the club to take over at Second Division Leyton Orient in September. Incoming was former England international Neil Franklin, who had been managing APOEL in Cyprus. Franklin's first piece of business was the sale of prolific forward Bobby Hunt to Northampton Town for £18,000. Hunt's 23 goals scored by the end of February was not surpassed despite his exit as Colchester finished the season in a disappointing 17th–position. Colchester had an impressive run in the League Cup, seeing off Fulham of the First Division 5–3 in the first round, before beating Northampton in the second round but falling to defeat against Workington in the third. They beat Brighton & Hove Albion in the first round of the FA Cup, but were defeated in the second by Queens Park Rangers.http://www.cu-fc.com/news/article/history-1950s-and-1960s-230131.aspx The 1950s and 1960s Hudson Matt 11 July 2012 Colchester United FC 3 May 2011 Players match played 25 April 1964.http://coludata.co.uk/content.php?pg=appearances&pd=1010#frmft=True&pg=appearances&pd=1010&fsea=24&fplist=all&flgcup=all&fcompstShowAll=&fdfaShowAll= Appearances Coludata.co.uk 3 May 2016 Name Position Nationality Place of birth Date of birth Apps Goals Signed from Date signed Fee GoalkeepersPercy AmesGKENGPlymouth1963 6 1 1931 12 13 y3720ENG Tottenham Hotspur1 May 1955Free transferAlan BuckGKENGColchester1963 6 1 1946 8 25 y00AmateurJuly 1963Free transferGeorge RamageGKSCODalkeith1963 6 1 1937 1 29 y120SCO Third Lanark15 March 1963DG Date of signing refers to the date of the player's first game for the clubNominal DefendersDuncan ForbesCBSCOEdinburgh1963 6 1 1941 6 19 y540SCO Musselburgh Athletic4 September 1961NominalJohn FowlerFBSCOLeith1963 6 1 1933 10 17 y3475SCO Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic20 August 1955DGFree transferRichie GriffithsFBENGEarls Colne1963 6 1 1942 3 21 y420ENG Colchester CasualsJune 1961Free transferDavid LaittFBENGColchester1963 6 1 1946 11 1 y00AmateurSummer 1962Free transferMick LoughtonCBENGColchester1963 6 1 1942 12 8 y00AmateurAugust 1961Free transferEdgar RumneyFBENGAbberton1963 6 1 1936 9 15 y360ENG Colchester Casuals1 May 1957Free transferKeith RutterCBENGLeeds1963 6 1 1934 9 10 y210ENG Queens Park Rangers26 February 1963DG£4,000 MidfieldersJohn DochertyWHSCOGlasgow1963 6 1 1935 2 28 y00SCO Heart of Midlothian14 September 1963DGFree transferRoy McCrohanWHENGReading1963 6 1 1930 9 22 y332ENG Norwich City1 September 1962Part exchangeDerek TrevisMFENGBirmingham1963 6 1 1942 9 9 y00ENG Aston Villa7 March 1964DGFree transfer ForwardsMike GriceWGENGWoking1963 6 1 1931 11 3 y15624ENG Coventry City18 August 1962SDG Date of signing refers to the date of the player's first game in his second spell for the club£1,000Bobby HillIFSCOEdinburgh1963 6 1 1938 6 9 y21322SCO Easthouses Lily Miners Welfare9 June 1955Free transferMartyn KingCFENGBirmingham1963 6 1 1937 8 23 y177117AmateurSummer 1955Free transferTommy McCollIFAUSSCO Glasgow1963 6 1 1945 9 19 y00SCO Dennistoun Waverley24 August 1963DGFree transferTony MillerIFENGChelmsford1963 6 1 1937 10 26 y00AmateurMay 1958Free transferBilly StarkFWSCOGlasgow1963 6 1 1937 5 27 y213ENG Carlisle UnitedNovember 1962£3,750Peter WrightWGENGColchester1963 6 1 1934 1 26 y41286AmateurNovember 1951Free transfer Transfers In Date Position Nationality Name From Fee Ref.July 1963GKENGAlan BuckAmateurFree transferhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=259 Alan Buck Coludata.co.uk 7 May 2016 August 1963FBENGPat WoodsAUS South Coast UnitedFree transferhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=251 Pat Woods Coludata.co.uk 7 May 2016 24 August 1963IFAUSTommy McCollSCO Dennistoun WaverleyFree transferhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=250 Tommy McColl Coludata.co.uk 7 May 2016 DG Date of signing refers to the date of the player's first game for the club14 September 1963WHSCOJohn DochertySCO Heart of MidlothianFree transferhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=252 John Docherty Coludata.co.uk 7 May 2016 DG7 March 1964MFENGDerek TrevisENG Aston VillaFree transferhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=253 Derek Trevis Coludata.co.uk 7 May 2016 DG Out Date Position Nationality Name To Fee Ref.7 October 1963WHENGRon HuntRetiredRetiredhttp://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=183 Ron Hunt Coludata.co.uk 7 May 2016 FG Date of departure refers to the date of the player's final game for the clubMarch 1964FWENGBobby HuntENG Northampton Town£18,000http://coludata.co.uk/item.php?pg=player&it=232 Bobby Hunt Coludata.co.uk 7 May 2016 28 March 1964FBENGPat WoodsAUS South Coast UnitedFree transferFG Total incoming: ~ £18,000 Match details Friendlies 1963 08 10 y 15:00 BST Southend United 4–1 Report Colchester United Jones 26Beesley 59 78Bradbury 63 pen.
