The Radical Left narrowly retained its majority in the National Council.Elections to the National Council 1848–1917: Distribution of seats by party or political orientation https://web.archive.org/web/20150923230855/http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/fr/index/themen/17/22/lexi.Document.137139.xls 2015-09-23 BFS Electoral system The 147 members of the National Council were elected in 52 single- and multi-member constituencies using a three-round voting system of the Exhaustive ballot or a multiple-winner variant thereof. To be elected, in the first or second round a candidate or candidates had to receive a vote from a majority of the voters. If not all the seats were filled in the first or second round, it went to a third round. Again the least-popular candidate was eliminated but now only a plurality was required to determine the winner(s). Voters could cast as many votes as there were seats in their constituency. There was one seat for every 20,000 citizens, with seats allocated to cantons based on that ratio.Dieter Nohlen & Philip Stöver (2010) Elections in Europe: A data handbook, p1886 9783832956097 The elections were held under the new Federal law concerning the elections of National Council members passed on 20 June 1890. Following the 1888 census (which had been brought forward from 1890 in order to redraw the constituencies prior to the elections) the number of seats was increased from 145 to 147, whilst the number of constituencies was increased from 49 to 52; Basel-Stadt, St. Gallen and Zürich all gained one seat, whilst Ticino lost a seat. Results National Council Voter turnout was highest in Schaffhausen (where voting was compulsory) at 94.3% and lowest in Schwyz at 35.6%. 300px Radical Left 40.9 74 +1 Free Democratic Party of Switzerland Catholic Right 25.6 35 0 Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland Liberal Centre 15.7 20 +1 Liberal Party of Switzerland Democratic Group 10.4 15 +1 Social Democratic Party 3.6 1 +1 Evangelical Right 2.4 2 –2 Evangelical People's Party of Switzerland Independents 1.4 0 0 415098 +2 664144 BFS (seats) By constituency ConstituencySeatsPartySeats wonElected membersZürich 16Liberal Centre3*Konrad Cramer Arnold Bürkli Hans Konrad PestalozziDemocratic Group2*Johann Jakob Schäppi Carl Theodor CurtiSocial Democratic Party1Jakob VogelsangerZürich 24Liberal Centre3*Johann Heinrich Bühler Johann Jakob Abegg Johannes EschmannDemocratic Group1Johann Jakob KellerZürich 34Democratic Group4*Rudolf Geilinger Ludwig Forrer Johannes Stössel Albert LocherZürich 43Democratic Group2*Friedrich Scheuchzer Johannes MoserLiberal Centre1Heinrich SteinemannBern 55Radical Left5*Matthäus Zurbuchen Arnold Gottlieb Bühler Johann Zürcher Johann Jakob Rebmann Carl Samuel ZyroBern 65Radical Left5*Karl Stämpfli Eduard Müller Johann Jakob Hauser Rudolf Brunner Johann JennyBern 74Radical Left4*Fritz Bühlmann Adolf Müller Gottfried Joost Gottlieb BergerBern 84Radical Left2*Ernst August Grieb Gottfried BangerterBern People's Party1Ulrich BurkhalterLiberal Centre1Jakob Adolf RothBern 94Radical Left4*Eduard Bähler Eduard Marti Johannes Zimmermann Rudolf HäniBern 103Radical Left3*Pierre Jolissaint Joseph Stockmar Albert GobatBern 112Catholic Right1Joseph ChoquardRadical Left1Henri CuenatLucerne 122Radical Left2*Josef Vonmatt Friedrich WüestLucerne 133Catholic Right3*Candid Hochstrasser Josef Zemp Josef ErniLucerne 142Catholic Right2*Franz Xaver Beck Josef Anton SchobingerUri 151Catholic Right1Franz SchmidSchwyz 163Catholic Right3*Vital Schwander Sr. Nikolaus Benziger Fridolin HoldenerObwalden 171Catholic Right1Peter Anton MingNidwalden 181Catholic Right1Hans von Matt Sr.Glarus 192Democratic Group1Kaspar SchindlerLiberal Centre1Rudolf GallatiZug 201Catholic Right1Franz HedigerFribourg 212Radical Left1Friedrich Abraham StockCatholic Right1Georges PythonFribourg 222Catholic Right2*Paul Aeby Louis de WuilleretFribourg 232Catholic Right2*Louis Grand Alphonse ThéraulazSolothurn 244Radical Left3*Joseph Gisi Wilhelm Vigier Albert BrosiLiberal Centre1Bernard HammerBasel-Stadt 254Radical Left3*Ernst Brenner Eduard Eckenstein Hermann KinkelinLiberal Centre1Paul SpeiserBasel-Landschaft 263Radical Left3*Emil Frey Jakob Buser Ambrosius RosenmundSchaffhausen 272Democratic Group1Wilhelm JoosRadical Left1Robert GrieshaberAppenzell Ausserrhoden 283Liberal Centre2*Johannes Zuberbühler Johann Jakob SturzeneggerRadical Left1Johann Conrad SondereggerAppenzell Innerhoden 291Catholic Right1J.
