The league operated in five regional divisions, Berlin, North, South, Southwest and West. The five league champions and runners-up then entered a promotion play-off to determine the two clubs to move up to the Bundesliga for the next season. Northern German and Berlin champions Eintracht Braunschweig and Tennis Borussia Berlin were promoted. It was the last season of the Regionalliga as a tier two league, being replaced by two regional divisions of the 2. Bundesliga at this level from 1974–75. Apart from the two teams promoted to the Bundesliga, 38 clubs qualified for the new 2. Bundesliga while the remaining 40 dropped down to the third division Verbandsligas, Amateurligas and Oberligas. Qualification for the 2. Bundesliga took the previous five Regionalliga season into account to determine the qualified teams, rather than just the final tables of 1973–74.DSFS Liga-Chronik, p. C 3 & 4 Regionalliga Nord The 1973–74 season saw three new clubs in the league, Concordia Hamburg and VfL Pinneberg, both promoted from the Amateurliga, while Eintracht Braunschweig been relegated from the Bundesliga to the league. main football Fussballdaten.de de complete 5 ONE TWO THR FOR FIV SIX SEV EIG NIN TEN ELE TWE AAA AAB AAC AAD AAE AAF AAG PO PO T T T R T R R R R T R R R RQ RQ RQ RQ 30 3 3 125 23 26 4 6 113 48 18 14 4 84 43 19 8 9 77 51 15 13 8 48 38 18 6 12 71 55 16 7 13 74 57 13 12 11 55 54 11 16 9 57 59 15 6 15 44 56 11 13 12 70 67 12 9 15 55 46 11 9 16 54 73 11 9 16 35 61 8 7 21 48 76 8 6 22 34 80 7 7 22 48 107 5 10 21 43 76 6 5 25 40 105 Eintracht Braunschweig FC St. Pauli VfL Osnabrück VfL Wolfsburg HSV Barmbeck-Uhlenhorst VfB Oldenburg Olympia Wilhelmshaven SV Meppen Arminia Hannover Concordia Hamburg OSV Hannover Göttingen 05 Holstein Kiel TuS Bremerhaven 93 Heider SV VfB Lübeck Itzehoer SV VfL Pinneberg Phönix Lübeck P R R R R R R R R R O R O 1) Points.
