100 metres backstroke

none The 100 metres backstroke is an event in competitive swimming. World records are ratified by World Aquatics (formerly FINA). The current long course world record holders are Italy's Thomas Ceccon and the US' Regan Smith, while the current short course world record holders are Hungary's Hubert Kós, and Smith. The men's event was first contested at the Olympic Games in 1908; it was removed from the 1964 program and was reinstated at the 1968 games. The women's event has been contested since 1924. The current Olympic champions are Ceccon, and Australia's Kaylee McKeown. The men's and women's events have been contested at the World Aquatics Championships since the inaugural edition in 1973; the current world champions (long course) are South Africa's Pieter Coetze, and McKeown. The men's and women's events have been contested at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) since the inaugural edition in 1993; the current world champions (short course) are Miron Lifintsev and Smith. thumb|Graphic data for World Record Progression in Men and Women Swimming 50m-100m-200m Long and Short Course Butterfly-Backstroke-Breaststroke-Freestyle World record progression List of world records in swimming High-technology swimwear Men long course yes yes yes - 1 1:02.2 David Theile AUS dmy 1956 December 6 Olympic Games AUS Melbourne - 2 1:01.5 John Monckton John Monckton (swimmer) AUS dmy 1958 February 15 Australian Championships AUS Perth 3 1:01.3 Bob Bennett Bob Bennett (swimmer) USA dmy 1961 August 19 Men’s NAAA Championships USA Los Angeles 4 1:01.0 h Tom Stock Tom Stock (swimmer) USA dmy 1962 August 11 - USA Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 5 1:00.9 Tom Stock Tom Stock (swimmer) USA dmy 1962 August 12 - USA Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 6 1:00.8 Ernst-Joachim Küppers FRG dmy 1964 August 28 - FRG Dortmund 7 1:00.0 Thompson Mann USA dmy 1964 September 3 - USA New York City 8 59.6 r Thompson Mann USA dmy 1964 October 16 Olympic Games JPN Tokyo 9 59.5 h Doug Russell Doug Russell (swimmer) USA dmy 1967 August 28 Summer Universiade JPN Tokyo 10 59.3 Charlie Hickcox USA dmy 1967 August 28 Summer Universiade JPN Tokyo 11 59.1 Charlie Hickcox USA dmy 1967 August 31 Summer Universiade JPN Tokyo 12 58.4 Roland Matthes DDR dmy 1967 September 21 - DDR Leipzig 13 58.0 Roland Matthes DDR dmy 1968 October 26 Olympic Games Mexico City MEX 14 57.8 Roland Matthes DDR dmy 1969 August 23 - Würzburg FRG 15 56.9 h Roland Matthes DDR dmy 1970 September 8 European Championships Barcelona ESP 16 56.7 Roland Matthes DDR dmy 1971 September 4 - Leipzig DDR 17 56.3 Roland Matthes DDR dmy 1972 April 8 - Moscow URS 17 56.30 =, r Roland Matthes DDR dmy 1972 September 4 Olympic Games Munich FRG 19 56.19 sf John Naber USA dmy 1976 July 18 Olympic Games Montreal CAN 20 55.49 John Naber USA dmy 1976 July 19 Olympic Games Montreal CAN 21 55.44 h Rick Carey USA dmy 1983 August 6 US National Championships Clovis Clovis, California USA 22 55.38 Rick Carey USA dmy 1983 August 6 US National Championships Clovis Clovis, California USA 23 55.19 Rick Carey USA dmy 1983 August 21 Pan American Games Caracas VEN 24 55.17 h Igor Polyansky URS dmy 1988 March 15 - Tallinn URS 25 55.16 Igor Polyansky URS dmy 1988 March 16 - Tallinn URS 26 55.00 Igor Polyansky URS dmy 1988 July 16 Soviet Union Championships Moscow URS 27 54.95 h David Berkoff USA dmy 1988 August 12 US Olympic Trials Austin Austin, Texas USA 28 54.91 David Berkoff USA dmy 1988 August 12 US Olympic Trials Austin Austin, Texas USA 29 54.51 h David Berkoff USA dmy 1988 September 16 Olympic Games Seoul KOR 30 53.93 r Jeff Rouse Jeff Rouse (swimmer) USA dmy 1991 August 25 Pan Pacific Championships Edmonton CAN 31 53.86 r Jeff Rouse Jeff Rouse (swimmer) USA dmy 1992 July 31 Olympic Games Barcelona ESP 32 53.60 Lenny Krayzelburg USA dmy 1999 August 24 Pan Pacific Championships Sydney AUS 33 53.45 r Aaron Peirsol USA dmy 2004 August 21 Olympic Games Athens GRE Two World Records to the USA in One Race: American Men Set New 400m Medley Standard, Aaron Peirsol Lowers the 100 Backstroke Mark. https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/two-world-records-to-the-usa-in-one-race-american-men-set-new-400m-medley-standard-aaron-peirsol-lowers-the-100-backstroke-mark/ Swimming World 21 August 2004 16 May 2025 34 53.17 Aaron Peirsol USA dmy 2005 April 2 US World Championships Trials Indianapolis USA 2005 US World Championships Trials - Men's 100m Backstroke Final Results https://www.omegatiming.com/File/0001050F0015000000FFFFFFFFFFFF01.pdf Omega Timing 2 April 2005 16 May 2025 35 52.98 Aaron Peirsol USA dmy 2007 March 27 World Championships Melbourne AUS 12th FINA World Championships - Men's 100m Backstroke Final Results https://www.omegatiming.com/File/0001070D0026000000FFFFFFFFFFFF01.pdf Omega Timing 27 March 2007 16 May 2025 36 52.89 Aaron Peirsol USA dmy 2008 July 1 US Olympic Trials Omaha Omaha, Nebraska USA 2008 US Olympic Trials - Men's 100m Backstroke Final Results https://www.omegatiming.com/File/0001080B001E000000FFFFFFFFFFFF01.pdf Omega Timing 1 July 2008 16 May 2025 37 52.54 Aaron Peirsol USA dmy 2008 8 12 Olympic Games Beijing CHN Olympics, Swimming: Flash Aaron Peirsol Crushes 100 Back World Record En Route To Win https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/olympics-swimming-flash-aaron-peirsol-crushes-100-back-world-record-en-route-to-win/ Swimming World John Lohn 12 August 2008 16 May 2025 38 52.38 r Aschwin Wildeboer ESP dmy 2009 July 1 Mediterranean Games Pescara ITA Mediterranean Games: Flash!
