The Chargers were coached by Chris Luongo who was in his second season as head coach. His assistant coaches were Gavin Morgan and Tim Flynn. The Chargers played their home games in the Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center and competed as an independent. On October 24, 2011, interim UAH President Malcolm Portera announced that the 2011–12 season would be the school's final season competing at the NCAA Division I level, citing financial reasons. The program would be "realigned" as a club team, and the coaches' jobs would be eliminated as of May 31, 2012.Turner John UAH iced: Charger hockey's 33-year history ends with controversial decision http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/10/uah_iced_charger_hockeys_33-ye.html November 6, 2011 The Huntsville Times October 25, 2011 https://web.archive.org/web/20111029030320/http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/10/uah_iced_charger_hockeys_33-ye.html October 29, 2011 live mdy New UAH president Dr. Robert Altenkirch reversed the decision after he and school administrators met with local supporters on December 6, 2011.Gattis Paul UAH announces plan to bring back Division I hockey program http://blog.al.com/breaking/2011/12/uah_announces_plan_to_bring_ba.html December 6, 2011 The Huntsville Times https://web.archive.org/web/20120109051900/http://blog.al.com/breaking/2011/12/uah_announces_plan_to_bring_ba.html January 9, 2012 live mdy UAH continued to play at the NCAA Division I level for the 2012–13 season.
