2011 Richmond Football Club season

This season was Damien Hardwick's second season as senior coach. It was also the first season Richmond played against the Gold Coast, and was also the first time the club played a home-and-away game at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns. Season summary The start of the 2011 season was hopeful for the Tigers. In round 1, the Tigers were in front at three quarter time, to lose by 20 points to Carlton in the traditional blockbuster. Media commentators and AFL fans alike noted Richmond's improvement. In round 2, the Tigers shocked the AFL world when they drew with grand finalists from the previous year, St Kilda, even with their goal kicking star Jack Riewoldt going down with a concussion in the first quarter. In rounds 3 and 4, the Tigers suffered significant losses to Hawthorn and Collingwood, but showed promise in their fightback in the third quarter against Collingwood. Their breakthrough came in round 5, when they beat North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium in front of a packed crowd. This started a good run for the Tigers. Richmond defeated Brisbane in round 6, then Fremantle in round 7. This put them just outside the Top 8. They had a narrow loss to the Western Bulldogs in round 8. In round 9, the Tigers had a big win against Essendon in the traditional "Dreamtime at the G" match after going in the underdogs. The crowd of over 80,000 people were treated to an intense game, with Richmond coming out victorious. Richmond then had a complete form turn around, with a 15-point loss against bottom-ranked Port Adelaide in Alice Springs after the club decided to host the home game match interstate, a decision that was roundly questioned by fans and the media.http://www.theroar.com.au/2011/06/01/was-richmonds-darwin-experiment-a-mistake/ Was Richmond's Darwin experiment a mistake? The bye followed, then another loss to Sydney. Richmond then had a return to form, beating Brisbane at the Gabba. Richmond's poor form continued, with straight losses to Melbourne, Carlton, Essendon, Gold Coast and Geelong. The Tigers got a badly needed bye in round 19 and then travelled to Perth in round 20 to face the West Coast Eagles where they were beaten. Richmond had a win against Sydney in round 21 and then also won their next two games, against Melbourne and Adelaide, but lost their round 24 match to North Melbourne. 2010 off-season list changes Retirements and delistings PlayerReasonClub gamesCareer gamesRefTroy SimmondsRetired93197http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/tiger-simmonds-to-retire-wont-play-out-season-20100525-wb2w.html Tiger Simmonds to retire, won't play out season Jake Niall 26 May 2010 The AgeGraham PolakRetired38111 http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/polak-calls-it-a-day-20100827-13vnb.html 27 August 2010 Polak calls it a day Scott Spits The AgeBen CousinsRetired32270 http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/ben-cousins-retires-from-afl-football-20100817-127jt.html 17 August 2010 Ben Cousins retires from AFL football The AgeTom HislopRe-rookied1724 Dean PoloDelisted5677 Clubs Delist And More Retire http://www.afana.com/drupal5/news/2010/10/17/delistings_more_retirements-2781 25 August 2016Jordan McMahonDelisted34148 Adam Thomson Delisted 432Relton Roberts Delisted22 Alroy Gilligan Delisted00 Trades DateGainedLostTrade partnerRef 7 October End of first round compensation pickPick 51 Richard Tambling http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/the-crows-have-traded-two-prime-draft-picks-for-richard-tambling/story-e6frecj3-1225935080454?nk=1de4e0b92ac29693825ca412707c486a-1472205448 Crows to trade two prime draft picks for Richard Tambling 7 October 2010 The Advertiser News Ltd. 26 August 2016August 2019 InternetArchiveBot yes 9 October Shaun Grigg Andrew Collins http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/carlton-swap-shaun-grigg-for-richmonds-andrew-collins/story-e6frf9jf-1225936422697?nk=1de4e0b92ac29693825ca412707c486a-1472205469 Carlton swap Shaun Grigg for Richmond's Andrew Collins 9 October 2010 Herald Sun News Ltd. 26 August 2016 Note: All traded picks are indicative and do not reflect final selection position National draft RoundOverall pickPlayerStatePositionTeam fromLeague fromRef 16Reece ConcaWAMidfielderPerthWAFL http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/2010-afl-national-draft-who-your-club-picked-20101118-17zfd.html 2010 AFL National Draft: who your clu 19 November 2010 230Jake Batchelor VICMidfielderDandenong StingraysTAC Cup 347Brad HelbigVICDefenderWest AdelaideSANFL 351Dean MacDonaldVICMidfielderGippsland PowerTAC Cup 463Tom DerickxWARuckClaremontWAFL 694 (Rookie Promotion)David GourdisVICFull BackAFL Preseason draft RoundOverall pickPlayerPositionTeam fromLeague fromRef 1 3Bachar Houli Half-Back AFL The Learned One 2011 AFL Pre-Season Draft http://www.triplem.com.au/melbourne/sport/afl/news//blog/2011-afl-preseason-draft/20101207-au4p.html Triple M 7 December 2010 7 December 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20110108153009/http://www.triplem.com.au/melbourne/sport/afl/news//blog/2011-afl-preseason-draft/20101207-au4p.html 8 January 2011 live Rookie draft RoundOverall pickPlayerStatePositionTeam fromLeague fromRef 111Ben Jakobi VICMidfielderCoburgVFL http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_drafts?year=2010&t=R&s=P 2010 AFL Rookie Draft 228Brad Miller VICUtilityAFL 345Tom Hislop VICMidfielderAFL 2011 squad Richmond Football Club black; gold; black; gold; , Coaching staff 18 August 2016 Senior list  2 Will Thursfield  3 Brett Deledio  4 Dustin Martin  6 Shaun Grigg  8 Jack Riewoldt  9 Trent Cotchin 10 Shane Edwards 12 David Astbury 14 Bachar Houli 15 Mitch Farmer 16 Luke McGuane 17 Chris Newman(c) 18 Alex Rance 19 Daniel Connors 20 Mitch Morton 21 Shane Tuck 22 Ben Nason 23 Daniel Jackson 25 Angus Graham 26 Robin Nahas 28 Jake King 29 Ty Vickery 30 Reece Conca 31 Jake Batchelor 32 Brad Helbig 33 David Gourdis 34 Andrew Browne 35 Matthew White 36 Dean MacDonald 37 Jayden Post 38 Ben Griffiths 39 Tom Derickx 40 Kelvin Moore 41 Nathan Foley 43 Matt Dea 44 Troy Taylor 46 Jeromey Webberley 48 Dylan Grimes Rookie list 13 Brad Miller 27 Tom Hislop 42 Jamie O'Reilly 45 Robbie Hicks 47 Ben Jakobi 49 Pat Contin 51 Nick Westoff Damien Hardwick Justin Leppitsch (defence) Adam Potter 8px Long-term injury list 8px Upgraded rookie (B) Category B rookie (vet) Veterans list (ret) Retired 2011 season Pre-season Date Score Opponent Opponent's score Result Home/away Venue Attendance Friday, 4 February All-Stars Match cancelled Away TIO Stadium/Traeger Park Richmond was to have played an exhibition match against the Indigenous All-Stars on 4 February, but the match was cancelled.
