Rangers had played in 51 previous Scottish Cup finals, with 33 wins in the competition. The most recent appearance and victory for Rangers was in 2009, when they defeated Falkirk 1–0. This was the first meeting of the clubs in the Scottish Cup since 2008, when Rangers won 1–0 at Ibrox in a replay after a goalless draw at Easter Road. Hibernian and Rangers had previously met in one Scottish Cup Final, in 1979. Rangers won the cup that year by winning a second replay by 3–2, after the first two matches both finished goalless.https://www.rsssf.org/tabless/scotcuphistfull.html 1978/79 RSSSF 21 April 2016 3 December 2024 https://web.archive.org/web/20241203125423/https://www.rsssf.org/tabless/scotcuphistfull.html live Match Details 21 May 2016 15:00 Rangers 2–3 Report Hibernian Miller 27Halliday 64 Stokes 3 80Gray 90+2 Hampden Park, Glasgow 50,701 Steven McLean _rangers1516h _rangers1516h _rangers1516h _rangers1516h _redtopl 0000FF 0000FF 0000FF FFFFFF 000000 Rangers _hibernian1516h _hibernian1516h _hibernian1516h _hibernian1516hl 003300 003300 003300 FFFFFF FFFFFF Hibernian GK 25 ENG Wes FoderinghamDF 2 ENG James Tavernier (c) 56 DF 4 IRL Rob KiernanDF 27 SCO Danny WilsonDF 5 SCO Lee WallaceMF 8 USA Gedion Zelalem 63MF 16 SCO Andy HallidayMF 23 SCO Jason HoltMF 19 SCO Barrie McKayFW 33 ENG Martyn Waghorn 75FW 9 SCO Kenny MillerSubstitutes:GK 1 SCO Cammy BellMF 7 ENG Nicky LawMF 14 SCO Nicky Clark 75MF 22 NIR Dean Shiels 63MF 62 SCO Liam BurtManager:ENG Mark Warburton GK 25 IRL Conrad LoganDF 2 SCO David Gray (c)DF 24 SCO Darren McGregorDF 4 SCO Paul Hanlon 83DF 5 ENG Liam Fontaine 70DF 16 SCO Lewis StevensonMF 8 SCO Fraser Fyvie 59MF 10 SCO Dylan McGeouchMF 18 SCO John McGinnFW 28 IRL Anthony StokesFW 35 SCO Jason Cummings 65Substitutes:GK 1 ENG Mark OxleyMF 3 SCO Liam Henderson 70MF 6 ENG Marvin BartleyMF 17 AUS Martin BoyleFW 19 SCO James Keatings 65DF 27 NOR Niklas Gunnarsson 83FW 29 ENG Chris DagnallManager:ENG Alan Stubbs Match rules 90 minutes 30 minutes of extra time if necessary Penalty shoot-out if scores still level Seven named substitutes Maximum of three substitutions Post-match At the end of the match, thousands of Hibernian fans spilled out onto the pitch in celebration.
