The former World Cup winner rode an intelligent race, saving everything for the finale while the stronger riders wore each other out. He also profited from the lack of co-operation between the favourites (Tchmil, Museeuw, Bartoli, Vainsteins etc.), who were in a chasing group but not willing to close it down.www.cyclingnews.com world cup cycling http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/results/2001/apr01/RVV/results.shtml https://web.archive.org/web/20080828213757/http://www.cyclingnews.com/results/2001/apr01/RVV/results.shtml 2008-08-28 live 2009-04-08 Final standings CyclistTeamTime1Gianluca Bortolami ITAVIN 20016h 10' 23"2Erik Dekker NEDRAB 2001s.t.3Denis Zanette ITABRE 2001s.t.4Rolf Sørensen DENSAX 2001s.t.5Daniele Nardello ITAMAP 2001s.t.6Chris Peers BELCOF 2001s.t.7Maximilian Sciandri GBRLAM 2001s.t.8Ludo Dierckxsens BELLAM 2001s.t.9Andrei Tchmil BELLOT 2001 + 19"10Romans Vainsteins LATDFF 2001s.t.
