They also won their respective groups. Final Both Japan and Malaysia arrived in the final having already surpassed expectations by defeating traditional powerhouses China and Indonesia in the semi-final, both with 3–0 scores. In the first singles matches, Malaysia's world number one Lee Chong Wei defeated Japan's Kenichi Tago in straight sets. In the next match, Malaysia's scratch combination of Hoon Thien How and Tan Boon Heong won the first set, but Japan's world number three pair of Kenichi Hayakawa and Hiroyuki Endo stayed close and pipped their opponent to win the match. In the second singles match, upcoming Japanese player Kento Momota bested Chong Wei Feng in straight sets. The second doubles match was perhaps the most explosive, with quick volleys, many powerful smashes, and several diving saves. In the end, Malaysia's doubles team of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong stayed unbeaten during the tournament and leveled the best of five contest by defeating Japan's Keigo Sonoda and Takeshi Kamura in three sets. Thus, the hopes of both countries fell to the third singles players. Malaysia's Daren Liew got out to an early lead, but as the game progressed he made a couple of errors, misjudging the shuttle. Japan's Takuma Ueda won the match in three sets, giving Japan their first title. So near yet so far http://www.nst.com.my/sports/badminton/so-near-yet-so-far-1.605151 26 May 2014 New Straits Times 26 May 2014 Japan Malaysia Siri Fort Sports Complex Court 1 25 May 2014 15:00 3 2 Kenichi Tago 12 16 Lee Chong Wei 21 21 Hiroyuki Endo Kenichi Hayakawa 12 21 21 Hoon Thien How Tan Boon Heong 21 17 19 Kento Momota 21 21 Chong Wei Feng 15 17 Takeshi Kamura Keigo Sonoda 21 17 12 Goh V Shem Tan Wee Kiong 19 21 21 Takuma Ueda 21 18 21 Daren Liew 12 21 17 bd 2014 Thomas Cup champion Japan First Uber Cup Groups 2014 Uber Cup group stage Group W TeamPtsPldWLChina6330England4321Chinese Taipei2312Russia0303 18 May 2014China5–0RussiaChinese Taipei2–3England20 May 2014China5–0EnglandChinese Taipei4–1Russia21 May 2014China5–0Chinese TaipeiEngland4–1Russia Group X TeamPtsPldWLSouth Korea6330Indonesia4321Singapore2312Australia0303 18 May 2014Indonesia5–0AustraliaSouth Korea5–0Singapore20 May 2014Indonesia4–1SingaporeSouth Korea5–0Australia21 May 2014South Korea4–1IndonesiaAustralia0–5Singapore Group Y TeamPtsPldWLIndia6330Thailand4321Hong Kong2312Canada0303 18 May 2014India5–0CanadaThailand3–2Hong Kong19 May 2014India4–1Hong KongThailand5–0Canada20 May 2014Thailand2–3IndiaCanada1–4Hong Kong Group Z TeamPtsPldWLJapan6330Denmark4321Malaysia2312Germany0303 19 May 2014Denmark3–2MalaysiaJapan5–0Germany20 May 2014Japan4–1MalaysiaDenmark5–0Germany21 May 2014Japan4–1DenmarkMalaysia5–0Germany Knockout stage 22 May 2014 China 3 England 0 22 May 2014 South Korea 3 Thailand 1 22 May 2014 Indonesia 0 India 3 22 May 2014 Denmark 0 Japan 3 23 May 2014 China 3 South Korea 0 23 May 2014 India 2 Japan 3 24 May 2014 China 3 Japan 1 Quarterfinals South Korea Thailand Siri Fort Sports Complex Court 4 22 May 2014 12:00 3 1 Sung Ji-hyun 15 15 Ratchanok Intanon 21 21 Jang Ye-na Kim So-young 21 21 Sapsiree Taerattanachai Kunchala Voravichitchaikul 19 17 Bae Youn-joo 21 17 21 Nichaon Jindapon 8 21 17 Jung Kyung-eun Kim Ha-na 21 21 Porntip Buranaprasertsuk Puttita Supajirakul 10 19 Kim Hyo-min Busanan Ongbumrungpan Denmark Japan Siri Fort Sports Complex Court 2 22 May 2014 12:00 0 3 Line Kjaersfeldt 18 21 21 Minatsu Mitani 21 9 23 Christinna Pedersen Kamilla Rytter Juhl 12 13 Misaki Matsutomo Ayaka Takahashi 21 21 Anna Thea Madsen 14 17 Sayaka Takahashi 21 21 Line Damkjaer Kruse Marie Roepke Reika Kakiiwa Miyuki Maeda Sandra-Maria Jensen Akane Yamaguchi China England Siri Fort Sports Complex Court 3 22 May 2014 18:00 3 0 Li Xuerui 21 21 Fontaine Mica Chapman 15 9 Bao Yixin / Tang Jinhua 22 21 Gabrielle Adcock / Lauren Smith 20 10 Wang Shixian 21 21 Sarah Walker 7 13 Wang Xiaoli / Zhao Yunlei Heather Olver / Kate Robertshaw Wang Yihan Panuga Riou Indonesia India Siri Fort Sports Complex Court 1 22 May 2014 18:00 0 3 Lindaweni Fanetri 17 10 Saina Nehwal 21 21 Bellaetrix Manuputty 16 21 23 Pusarla Venkata Sindhu 21 10 25 Nitya Krishinda Maheswari Greysia Polii 18 18 Jwala Gutta Ashwini Ponnappa 21 21 Adriyanti Firdasari Puthenpurayil Chandrika Thulasi Suci Rizki Andini Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah Saina Nehwal Pusarla Venkata Sindhu Semifinals China South Korea Siri Fort Sports Complex Court 2 23 May 2014 12:00 3 0 Li Xuerui 21 21 Sung Ji-hyun 11 19 Bao Yixin Tang Jinhua 21 21 Jang Ye-na Kim So-young 11 12 Wang Shixian 21 16 21 Bae Youn-joo 13 21 10 Wang Xiaoli Zhao Yunlei Jung Kyung-eun Kim Ha-na Wang Yihan Kim Hyo-min India Japan Siri Fort Sports Complex Court 1 23 May 2014 18:00 2 3 Saina Nehwal 21 21 Minatsu Mitani 12 13 Pusarla Venkata Sindhu 19 21 26 Sayaka Takahashi 21 18 24 Jwala Gutta Ashwini Ponnappa 12 22 16 Misaki Matsutomo Ayaka Takahashi 21 20 21 Puthenpurayil Chandrika Thulasi 14 15 Eriko Hirose 21 21 Saina Nehwal Pusarla Venkata Sindhu 14 11 Reika Kakiiwa Miyuki Maeda 21 21 Three of the teams in the semi-final were among the top four seeded teams in this competition.
