It was the ninth edition of the annual Canadian Championship, and took place in the cities of Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver in 2016. The participating teams were Ottawa Fury FC and FC Edmonton of the second-division North American Soccer League, and the Montreal Impact, Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer, the first-level of Canadian club soccer. The Vancouver Whitecaps were the reigning champions; having won their first title in the 2015 competition. The winner, Toronto FC, was awarded the Voyageurs Cup and was supposed to become Canada's sole entry into the group stage of the 2017–18 CONCACAF Champions League. However, due to that tournament's restructuring, it was later announced that the Canadian representative at the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League would be determined by a playoff match between Toronto FC and the 2017 Canadian Championship winner.http://www.canadasoccer.com/canadian-championship-kicks-off-10th-edition-in-may-with-more-canadian-content-p160637&t=championship_article Canadian Championship Kicks off 10th Edition in May with more Canadian Content CanadaSoccer.com March 9, 2017 January 3, 2019 https://web.archive.org/web/20190103130059/https://www.canadasoccer.com/canadian-championship-kicks-off-10th-edition-in-may-with-more-canadian-content-p160637%26t%3Dchampionship_article dead Toronto FC went on to win the 2017 edition, however, and qualified without the need for a playoff. The higher seeded team had the option of deciding which leg it played at home. The team that scored the higher aggregate of goals in the two matches advanced. Toronto FC was declared champion and would have earned the right to play in a CONCACAF Champions League playoff match; however, this became no longer necessary after they also won the 2018 Canadian Championship. Each round was a two-legged series with the away goals rule. main 3 5,7 4,8 6 7-8 (4,8)-6 y y 2 y y Preliminary roundMay 11–18 Semi-finalsJune 1–8 FinalJune 21–29 NASL FC Edmonton 0 2 2 NASL Ottawa Fury FC 3 0 3 MLS Toronto FC 4 0 4 MLS Montreal Impact 2 0 2 NASL Ottawa Fury FC 2 0 2 MLS Vancouver Whitecaps FC 0 3 3 MLS Toronto FC (a) 1 1 2 MLS Vancouver Whitecaps FC 0 2 2 Preliminary round Summary main y n FC Edmonton 2–3 Ottawa Fury FC 0–3 2–0 Matches FC Edmonton v Ottawa Fury FC May 11 7:00 pm MDT (UTC−6) FC Edmonton 0–3 https://canadasoccer.com/match/1653/ Ottawa Fury FC Timbó 13 Haworth 69 Vered 74 Clarke Stadium, Edmonton, Alberta 3,000 Alain Ruch y Ottawa Fury FC v FC Edmonton May 18 7:30 pm EDT (UTC−4) Ottawa Fury FC 0–2 https://canadasoccer.com/match/1655/ FC Edmonton Corea 26 Eckersley 45 TD Place Stadium, Ottawa, Ontario 3,946 Mathieu Bourdeau y Ottawa Fury FC won 3–2 on aggregate.
