Operational
The Marine Corps' Special Operations proof of concept consisted of Det One deploying to Iraq with Navy SEALs from Naval Special Warfare Group 1 in 2004. The initial force structure for the Marine Special Operations Battalions were the 1st and 2nd Force Reconnaissance Companies which then deployed elements to Afghanistan in 2007. The first deployment was marked with controversy and Marines from 2nd Raider Battalion were relieved from their operational charter in the country by an Army General from USSOCOM after claims were made that the Marines reacted inappropriately and caused excessive civilian casualties.Army general kicks Marines out of Afghanistan Gidget Fuentes Air Force Times http://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2007/03/marine_specops_afghanistan070323/ https://archive.today/20130120234624/http://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2007/03/marine_specops_afghanistan070323/ dead 2013-01-20 In September 2009 the 1st Raider Battalion returned to Afghanistan in command of a joint special operations task force in the northwest of the country.MarSOC battalion to take joint command Trista Talton Marine Corps Times http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/2009/09/marine_marsoc_090709w/ 2012-09-05 https://web.archive.org/web/20120223223105/http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/2009/09/marine_marsoc_090709w/ 2012-02-23 dead Pendleton Marines take on training role Jeanette Steele San Diego Union-Tribune http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2009/dec/16/marines-take-training-role-afghanistan/
