Derry City were accused of making extra payments to players using unofficial secondary contracts. This was against league rules which placed limits on the amount clubs could spend on players' wages. Cork City had been in serious financial difficulties for several seasons and its holding company was eventually wound up by the High Court. However both clubs were effectively reformed and were subsequently allowed to join the 2010 First Division.http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2009/1107/derrycity.html Derry thrown out of League of Ireland 7 November 2009 rte.ie 9 November 2009 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20091109015254/http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2009/1107/derrycity.html 9 November 2009https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/foyle_and_west/8356761.stm Derry City invited back to league 12 November 2009 news.bbc.co.ukhttp://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/despite-heartache-for-fans-and-players-the-harsh-reality-is-that-city-got-what-they-deserved-2076368.html Despite heartache for fans and players, the harsh reality is that City got what they deserved 24 February 2010 independent.ie 24 February 2010https://www.rsssf.org/tablesi/ier2010.html Ireland 2010 RSSSF 1 August 2016 Final table main WDL QR BOH Bohemians SHM Shamrock Rovers COR Cork City DER Derry City DUN Dundalk SLI Sligo Rovers StP St Patrick's Athletic GAL Galway United DRO Drogheda United BRW Bray Wanderers 24 5 7 62 21 C 21 10 5 51 27 17 9 10 42 28 R 18 5 13 49 31 R 12 8 16 46 51 11 10 15 41 51 13 4 19 29 46 12 6 18 36 57 7 11 18 32 50 O 6 10 20 30 56 Cork City were expelled from Premier Division after its holding company was wound up by the High Court.
