These rankings sort by the number of gold medals earned by a nation. The number of silver medals is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze medals. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically. This information is provided by the IOC. However, the IOC does not recognize or endorse any ranking system.Shipley Amy China's Show of Power https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/24/AR2008082400851_pf.html 2011-08-28 The Washington Post 2008-08-25 2018-10-03 https://web.archive.org/web/20181003143840/http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/24/AR2008082400851_pf.html live In the gymnastics events there were three athletes placed first for the men's pommel horse, with Paavo Aaltonen, Veikko Huhtanen and Heikki Savolainen all receiving gold medals for Finland in the same event, while no silver or bronze medals were handed out. Gehnäll Persson had been promoted to lieutenant three weeks before the competition. Just two and a half weeks after the competition, the Swedish army demoted him back to sergeant. According to the regulations at the time, only officers and “gentlemen riders” were eligible to take part, but not non-commissioned officers. Since Persson had only been promoted for the period surrounding the games, this was considered a violation of the rules. The incident led to the FEI modernizing its entry conditions, which were perceived as outdated.http://history.fei.org/sites/default/files/1948_London.pdf History of equestrian events at the Games of the XIV Olympiad Fédération Équestre Internationale https://web.archive.org/web/20180630161624/http://history.fei.org/sites/default/files/1948_London.pdf 30 June 2018 PDF, 208 kB 3 April 2024 FRA 1948 Summer André JousseaumeJean Saint-Fort PaillardMaurice Buret +1 −1 0 USA 1948 SummerRobert BorgEarl Foster ThomsonFrank Henry +1 −1 0 POR 1948 SummerFernando PaesFrancisco ValadasLuís Mena e Silva +1 +1 + List of official changes by countryNOC National Olympic Committee Gold Silver Bronze Net Change SWE 1948 Summer −1 0 0 −1 FRA 1948 Summer +1 −1 0 0 USA 1948 Summer 0 +1 −1 0 POR 1948 Summer 0 0 +1 +1 References 30em External links 1948 Summer Olympics 1948 Summer Olympics Olympedia.com http://www.olympedia.org/editions/12 24 February 2021 26 February 2021 https://web.archive.org/web/20210226035546/https://www.olympedia.org/editions/12 live Olympic Analytics/1948_1 olympanalyt.com http://olympanalyt.com/OlympAnalytics.php?param_pagetype=MedalsByCountries&param_games=1948%2F1 2020-08-21 2022-06-29 https://web.archive.org/web/20220629191415/http://olympanalyt.com/OlympAnalytics.php?param_pagetype=MedalsByCountries&param_games=1948%2F1 live A Map of Olympic Medals https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/08/04/sports/olympics/20080804_MEDALCOUNT_MAP.html 2011-08-29 The New York Times 2008-08-04 2018-12-25 https://web.archive.org/web/20181225173103/https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/08/04/sports/olympics/20080804_MEDALCOUNT_MAP.html live Findling John E.
