It was the nineteenth annual Big Ten men's basketball tournament and was the second tournament to feature 14 teams of the expanded Big Ten, including Maryland and Rutgers. The championship was won by Michigan State who defeated Purdue in the championship game. As a result, Michigan State received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The win marked Michigan State's fifth tournament championship, the most tournament championships by any team in the Big Ten (Ohio State has won five championships as well, but one has been vacated). It was Michigan State's third straight appearance in the championship game and their fourth appearance in the championship in the prior five years. Denzel Valentine was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Seeds All 14 Big Ten schools participated in the tournament. Teams were seeded by conference record, with a tiebreaker system used to seed teams with identical conference records. Seeding for the tournament was determined at the close of the regular conference season. The top 10 teams received a first round bye and the top four teams received a double bye.2016 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament Tiebreaking Procedures http://btn.com/big-ten-basketball-tiebreakers/ Big Ten Conference March 5, 2016 Tiebreaking procedures were unchanged from the 2015 tournament.http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/102615aad.html 2016 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament Tiebreaking Procedures Big Ten Conference Official Site Big Ten Conference 2016-03-07 https://web.archive.org/web/20160302055831/http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/102615aad.html 2016-03-02 dead SeedSchoolConf.Tiebreaker 1Tiebreaker 2Tiebreaker 3Tiebreaker 41Indiana15–3 2Michigan State13–53Maryland12–63–2 vs Pur, Iowa, Wis4Purdue 12–63–3 vs MD, Iowa, Wis0–1 vs Ind1–0 vs MSU1–0 vs OSU5Iowa12–62–2 vs MD, Pur, Wis0–2 vs Ind2–0 vs MSU0–1 vs OSU6Wisconsin12–62–3 vs MD, Pur, Iowa7Ohio State11–78Michigan10–89Northwestern8–1010Penn State7–1111Nebraska6–1212Illinois5–1313Minnesota2–1614Rutgers1–17 Schedule SessionGameTime*MatchupScoreTelevisionAttendance First round – Wednesday, March 911 4:30 pmNo. 13 Minnesota vs. No. 12 Illinois52–85ESPN216,52827:00 pmNo. 14 Rutgers vs. No. 11 Nebraska72–89BTN Second round – Thursday, March 102312:00 pmNo. 8 Michigan vs. No. 9 Northwestern72–70OTBTN15,70742:30 pmNo. 5 Iowa vs. No. 12 Illinois66–68356:30 pmNo. 7 Ohio State vs. No. 10 Penn State79–75ESPN215,75169:00 pmNo. 6 Wisconsin vs. No. 11 Nebraska58–70 Quarterfinals – Friday, March 114712:00 pmNo. 1 Indiana vs. No. 8 Michigan69–72ESPN18,35582:30 pmNo. 4 Purdue vs. No. 12 Illinois 89–58596:30 pmNo. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 7 Ohio State81–54BTN15,942109:00 pmNo. 3 Maryland vs. No. 11 Nebraska97–86 Semifinals – Saturday, March 126111:00 pmNo. 4 Purdue vs. No. 8 Michigan76–59CBS18,339123:30 pmNo. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 3 Maryland64–61 Championship – Sunday, March 137133:00 pmNo. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 4 Purdue66–62CBS16,429 *Game times in Eastern Time.fn1 The United States begins Daylight saving time at 2:00 am on Sunday, March 13.
