2002 FIFA World Cup qualification – UEFA Group 9

none April 2022 The 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA Group 9 was a UEFA qualifying group for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The group comprised Albania, England, Finland, Germany and Greece. The group was won by England, who qualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The runners-up, Germany — who would later reach the final of the tournament proper — entered the UEFA Qualification Playoffs. England started the qualification process badly, a home defeat to Germany and an away draw with Finland (soon after a poor team performance at the 2000 European Championships) saw the resignation of their manager Kevin Keegan, and the appointment of Sven-Göran Eriksson – the first non-Englishman to be given the job – in his place. With the new manager, they picked themselves up and won five in a row, while the Germans themselves unexpectedly faltered: also drawing with Finland away from home, they also lost their home match with England by a resounding 5–1. Finland, in fact, might have been in with a chance of qualification themselves, but they lost a match to the unfancied Greece, whom England had to play in their final match, while Finland played Germany at the same time, with England and Germany guaranteed the top two places and separated only by goal difference. Greece unexpectedly took the lead twice at Old Trafford, but England captain David Beckham scored an injury-time free kick to level the game. Germany could only manage a 0–0 draw against Finland, meaning England topped the group on goal difference.https://www.theguardian.com/football/2001/oct/08/newsstory.sport4 Germans left in trauma after trial by television Guardian 8 October 2001 6 October 2021 Standings main WDL Q ENG ENG GER GER FIN FIN GRE GRE ALB ALB 1992 5 2 1 16 6 5 2 1 14 10 3 3 2 12 7 2 1 5 7 17 1 0 7 5 14 WC WCPO green1 Qualification to 2002 FIFA World Cup blue1 Advance to UEFA play-offs y flag 0–1 2–1 2–2 2–0 1–5 0–0 2–0 2–1 0–0 2–2 5–1 2–1 0–2 2–4 1–0 1–0 1–3 0–2 0–2 2–0 complete FIFA World Cup qualification (UEFA) 2002, football - table and standings https://soccer365.me/competitions/739/2002/ soccer365.me 19 April 2024 15 December 2024 https://web.archive.org/web/20241215135351/https://soccer365.me/competitions/739/2002/ dead Matches Finland v Albania 2 September 2000 15:00 FIN 2–1 Report ALB 1992 Litmanen 45Riihilahti 68 Murati 64 Finnair Stadium, Helsinki 10,770 Rene Temmink (Netherlands) Germany v Greece 2 September 2000 19:00 GER 2–0 Report GRE Deisler 17Scholl 75 Volksparkstadion, Hamburg 48,500 Antonio Lopez Nieto (Spain) 2000 England v Germany football match England v Germany 7 October 2000 15:00 ENG 0–1 Report GER Hamann 14 Wembley Stadium, London 76,377 Stefano Braschi (Italy) Greece v Finland 7 October 2000 20:15 GRE 1–0 Report FIN Liberopoulos 59 Olympic Stadium, Athens 15,000 Pierluigi Collina (Italy) Albania v Greece 11 October 2000 19:00 ALB 1992 2–0 Report GRE Bushi 48Fakaj 90 Qemal Stafa Stadium, Tirana 10,200 Rune Pedersen (Norway) Finland v England 11 October 2000 19:00 FIN 0–0 Report ENG Olympiastadion, Helsinki 36,210 Alain Sars (France) England v Finland 24 March 2001 15:00 ENG 2–1 Report FIN Owen 44Beckham 50 Riihilahti 26 Anfield, Liverpool 44,262 Valentin Ivanov (Russia) Germany v Albania 24 March 2001 20:00 GER 2–1 Report ALB 1992 Deisler 49Klose 87 Kola 65 BayArena, Leverkusen 22,500 Graziano Cesari (Italy) Albania v England 28 March 2001 20:30 ALB 1992 1–3 Report ENG Rraklli 90+2 Owen 74Scholes 85Andy Cole 90+6 Qemal Stafa Stadium, Tirana 18,000 Alain Hamer (Luxembourg) Greece v Germany 28 March 2001 21:30 GRE 2–4 Report GER Charisteas 20 Georgiadis 43 Rehmer 6Ballack 25 pen.Klose 82Bode 90 Olympic Stadium, Athens 32,173 Vitor Melo Pereira (Portugal) Finland v Germany 2 June 2001 20:00 FIN 2–2 Report GER Forssell 28 43 Ballack 69 pen.Jancker 73 Olympiastadion, Helsinki 35,744 Dick Jol (Netherlands) Greece v Albania 2 June 2001 21:00 GRE 1–0 Report ALB 1992 Machlas 70 Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium, Heraklion 5,500 Nikolai Levnikov (Russia) Albania v Germany 6 June 2001 19:30 ALB 1992 0–2 Report GER Rehmer 27Ballack 68 Qemal Stafa, Tirana 12,800 Gilles Veissiere (France) Greece v England 6 June 2001 21:45 GRE 0–2 Report ENG Scholes 63Beckham 87 Olympic Stadium, Athens 29,300 Rune Pedersen (Norway) Albania v Finland 1 September 2001 19:00 ALB 1992 0–2 Report FIN Tainio 55Kuqi 90+3 Qemal Stafa, Tirana 6,400 Erol Ersoy (Turkey) 2001 Germany v England football match Germany v England 1 September 2001 19:30 GER 1–5 Report ENG Jancker 6 Owen 12 48 65Gerrard 45+3Heskey 73 Olympiastadion, Munich 63,000 Pierluigi Collina (Italy) Finland v Greece 5 September 2001 19:00 FIN 5–1 Report GRE Forssell 14 45Riihilahti 21Kolkka 38Litmanen 53 Karagounis 30 Olympiastadion, Helsinki 27,216 Paul Allaerts (Belgium) England v Albania 5 September 2001 20:00 ENG 2–0 Report ALB 1992 Owen 43Fowler 88 St. James' Park, Newcastle 51,046 Juan Fernández Marín (Spain) England v Greece 6 October 2001 15:00 ENG 2–2 Report GRE Sheringham 68Beckham 90+3 Charisteas 36Nikolaidis 69 Old Trafford, Manchester 66,000 Dick Jol (Netherlands) Germany v Finland 6 October 2001 16:00 GER 0–0 Report FIN Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen 52,000 Anders Frisk (Sweden) Goalscorers 54 20 ENG Michael Owen FIN Mikael Forssell ENG David Beckham FIN Aki Riihilahti GER Michael Ballack ENG Paul Scholes FIN Jari Litmanen GER Sebastian Deisler GER Carsten Jancker GER Miroslav Klose GER Marko Rehmer GRE Angelos Charisteas ALB 1992 Alban Bushi ALB 1992 Ervin Fakaj ALB 1992 Bledar Kola ALB 1992 Edvin Murati ALB 1992 Altin Rraklli ENG Andy Cole ENG Robbie Fowler ENG Steven Gerrard ENG Emile Heskey ENG Teddy Sheringham FIN Joonas Kolkka FIN Shefki Kuqi FIN Teemu Tainio GER Marco Bode GER Dietmar Hamann GER Mehmet Scholl GRE Georgios Georgiadis GRE Georgios Karagounis GRE Nikos Liberopoulos GRE Nikos Machlas GRE Themistoklis Nikolaidis References External links FIFA official page RSSSF - 2002 World Cup Qualification Allworldcup 9 Category:2000–01 in English men's football Qual Category:2000–01 in German football Qual Category:2000–01 in Greek football Category:2001–02 in Greek football Category:2000–01 in Albanian men's football Category:2001–02 in Albanian men's football Category:2000 in Finnish football Category:2001 in Finnish football
