Fullback and captain John Herrnstein rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Herrnstein's first touchdown came on Michigan's first possession. Michigan started the drive on the USC 37-yard line after Gary Prahst partially blocked a punt. Michigan led, 14–7, at halftime and 20–7 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter began with USC at Michigan's one-yard line, but USC halfback Rex Johnston fumbled on the goal line, and Michigan recovered the ball. Later in the quarter, Johnston ran 67 yards for a touchdown, but Johnston missed the extra-point kick, narrowing Michigan's lead to 20–13. On its next drive, Tom Maudlin threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Hilliard Hill. USC lined up in kick formation for the extra point, but a late substitution cost them five yards. On the next play, an illegal procedure penalty pushed USC back to the 13-yard line. USC then shifted out of the kick formation, and Maudlin threw to Bob Arnett in an attempted two point conversion, but Arnett was tackled at the seven-yard line.SC's Gamble Is U-M Joy, 20-19 Detroit Free Press Tommy Devine September 28, 1958 E1, E3 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/30042280/13-yard-conversion-pass-fails-scs/ Newspapers.com Statistical leaders Michigan's individual statistical leaders for the 1958 season include those listed below.Michigan Football Statistic Archive Query Page University of Michigan November 6, 2017 http://statsarchive.ath.umich.edu/VS-Football/footstart.php https://web.archive.org/web/20150402151629/http://statsarchive.ath.umich.edu/VS-Football/footstart.php April 2, 2015 dead(statistics retrieved by entering "1958" in the box for "Games & Totals by Season" and then, at the next screen, choosing "Display Season Totals") Rushing 2 Michigan Wolverines Player Attempts Net yards Yards per attempt Touchdowns Darrell Harper553095.62Brad Myers822022.53Fred Julian451804.00 Passing 2 Michigan Wolverines Player Attempts Completions Interceptions Comp % Yards Yds/Comp TD Long Bob Ptacek11565956.576011.7337Stan Noskin2913144.820415.7133Darrell Harper148057.113116.4056 Receiving 2 Michigan Wolverines Player Receptions Yards Yds/Recp TD Long Gary Prahst2231314.2237Brad Myers171699.9035Darrell Harper1313710.5136 Kickoff returns 2 Michigan Wolverines Player Returns Yards Yds/Return TD Long Brad Myers817321.6029Bob Ptacek613422.3041Fred Julian58817.6025 Punt returns 2 Michigan Wolverines Player Returns Yards Yds/Return TD Long Bob Ptacek8739.1019Brad Myers7639.0020Darrell Harper5336.6015 Personnel Letter winners The following 40 players received varsity letters for their participation on the 1958 team.Letter Winners The Michigan Daily November 25, 1958 6 https://digital.bentley.umich.edu/midaily/mdp.39015071754068/564 Bentley Historical Library1958 Roster Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan August 2, 2020 https://bentley.umich.edu/athdept/rosters/search.php?data=football&year_option=equals&year=1958&sortby=lastname%2C+firstname%2C+year&find=FIND Players who started at least four games are shown with their names in bold.
