Elections to Rossendale Borough Council were held on 1 May 2008. One third of the council was up for election and the Conservative party gained overall control of the council from no overall control. https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/7379150.stm Tories take control of Rossendale 2008-05-05 2008-05-02 BBC Online Overall turnout was up by one per cent from the last election in 2007 at 36.3%. http://www.rossendalefreepress.co.uk/news/s/1048115_tories_take_charge_in_election Tories take charge in election 2008-05-05 2008-05-02 Rossendale Free Press
The Conservative party gained three seats in the election including Worsley, the seat of the former Conservative leader of the council, Duncan Ruddick, who had defected from the party in 2007 to become an independent councillor. The Liberal Democrats gained one seat, while the Labour party lost three seats, with one defeated Labour councillor, Tina Durkin, blaming the Prime Minister Gordon Brown for the losses. http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/mostpopular.var.2243580.mostviewed.rossendale_election_results_conservative_strengthen_control.php Rossendale election results: Conservative strengthen control 2008-05-05 2008-05-02 Lancashire Telegraph https://web.archive.org/web/20080507112323/http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/mostpopular.var.2243580.mostviewed.rossendale_election_results_conservative_strengthen_control.php 2008-05-07
