It was the Rhinos' second-consecutive year in the third tier of American soccer, playing in the USL Professional Division for their second season. Background After the split of several USL clubs to create the North American Soccer League, United Soccer Leagues restructured its top division, and created the USL Pro, which received third-tier sanctioning from U.S. Soccer. The Rhinos, who had played in the second division of American soccer for their entire existence, opted to join the USL Pro, and thus play in the third tier. On the field, the Rhinos won their division, and boasted the fourth best overall record, making it the second straight year Rochester were division champions. For the third straight season, however, Rochester was eliminated in the first round of the respective league's playoffs. Outside of the USL Pro Division, the Rhinos were eliminated in the third round of the 2012 U.S. Open Cup by the MLS side Philadelphia Union.Freddy Adu scores 2, Philadelphia Union beats Rochester Rhinos 3-0 in U.S. Open Cup https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/redskins/freddy-adu-scores-2-philadelphia-union-beats-rochester-rhinos-3-0-in-us-open-cup/2012/05/29/gJQAt3fQ0U_story.html 5 June 2012 Washington PostJune 2021 medicmedic The Rhinos also played a School Day friendly against NPSL team FC Buffalo.Mendola Nick FC Buffalo falls to USL Pro's Rochester Rhinos, 1-0, in front of 9000 at Sahlen's Stadium http://www.fcbuffalo.org/uncategorized/hemmi/ FC Buffalo FC Buffalo 5 June 2012 Competitions Preseason Friendlies March 30, 2012 Sahlen's Stadium, Rochester, New York Rochester Rhinos Colgate University 2 - 0 McFayden 55Boughton58 W April 1, 2012 Sahlen's Stadium, Rochester, New York Rochester Rhinos UB Bulls 1 - 0 Bellamy 45Bellamy29 W April 6, 2012 Sahlen's Stadium, Rochester, New York Rochester Rhinos Syracuse Orange 2 - 1 McManus 23Rosenlund55 Thomas47 W May 8, 2012 Sahlen's Stadium, Rochester, New York Rochester Rhinos FC Buffalo 1-0 Hemmi 51 9000 W USL Pro 2012 USL Pro season Match 1 Los Angeles Blues April 14, 2012 10:30 PM ET 0 - 2 Rochester Rhinos Irving Garcia 36 Rosenlund 22 Rosenlund 21Earls 58 Titan Stadium Fullerton, CA 2,432 Jesus Cisneros, Eduardo Mariscal, Apolinar Mariscal, Jonathan Hughes W Match 2 Los Angeles Blues April 20, 2012 10:30 PM ET 0 - 2 Rochester Rhinos George Davis IV 48Borja 90 Hoxie 50 Banks 56 Tanke87 Titan Stadium Fullerton, CA 1,388 Jesus Cisneros, Felisha Mariscal, Adrian Gonzalez, Robert Warsaraz W Match 3 Dayton Dutch Lions April 28, 2012 7:30 PM ET 0 - 1 Rochester Rhinos Preciado 34 Knotek49 Copier 55 Banks 67 Careflight Field Dayton, OH 853 Cory Richardson, Pierre Saintil Francillen, Jamie Chierd, Grant Brown W Match 4 Rochester Rhinos May 5, 2012 7:05 PM ET 1 - 0 Charlotte Eagles Bloom9 og Sahlen's Stadium Rochester, NY 7959 Steve Montanino W Match 5 Charlotte Eagles May 11, 2012 8:00 PM ET 0 - 1 Rochester Rhinos Guzman 82 Chinn18McManus 58 Charlotte Christian Stadium Charlotte, NC 964 Daniel Thornberry W Match 6 Charleston Battery May 12, 2012 7:30 PM ET 0 - 1 Rochester Rhinos Flatley 70 Earls61McManus 72 Blackbaud Stadium Charleston, SC 3819 Sky Arthur Banning W Match 7 Rochester Rhinos May 18, 2012 7:35 PM ET 1 - 1 Dayton Dutch Lions Kirk 74 Roberts51 Bardsley 28 Sahlen's Stadium Rochester, NY 7414 David Mon D Match 8 Harrisburg City Islanders May 25, 2012 6:00 PM ET 1 - 0 Rochester Rhinos Langley 48 Rosenlund 39Fernandez 83 Skyline Sports Complex Harrisburg, PA Eric Weisbrod L Match 9 Dayton Dutch Lions May 26, 2012 7:30 PM ET 2 - 2 Rochester Rhinos Garner 34 Copier64 Brito52McManus 90Manscuk 30 Careflight Field Dayton, OH Andrew Bigelow D Match 10 Rochester Rhinos June 2, 2012 7:05 PM ET 0 - 1 Richmond Kickers Kirk 13 Cost 61Fernandez90 Vercollone 5 Sahlen's Stadium Rochester, NY 5237 David Mon L Match 11 Rochester Rhinos June 8, 2012 7:35 PM ET 1 - 1 Wilmington Hammerheads Rosenlund30 Earls 56 Taynor 61 Nicholson68Budnyy41 Sahlen's Stadium Rochester, NY 5944 Vito Testa D Match 12 Harrisburg City Islanders June 15, 2012 6:00 PM ET 2 - 1 Report Rochester Rhinos Ekra 86Mkosana 90 Roberts 49Traynor 77Tanke 80 Skyline Sports Complex Harrisburg, PA 1,958 Michael Donovan L Match 13 Pittsburgh Riverhounds June 17, 2012 3:00 PM ET 1 - 1 Report Rochester Rhinos Nuñez 16 Kirk 60 Highmark Stadium Pittsburgh, PA 1,056 D Match 14 Richmond Kickers June 23, 2012 7:00 PM ET 2 - 3 Report Rochester Rhinos Vercollone 8Callahan 45Yeisley 82Pascale 90Nyazamba 0 90+3 Brito 27Earls 42Tanke 59Hoxie 85 pen.Banks 90+2Nicht 90+4 City Stadium Richmond, VA 2,365 USA Shawn Fitch W Match 15 Rochester Rhinos June 30, 2012 7:05 PM ET 1 - 2 Report Harrisburg City Islanders Kirk 70Banks 75 89Nicht 90 Mkosana 52Yates 83 Sahlen's Stadium Rochester, NY 6,592 USA John Douglas L Match 16 Rochester Rhinos July 4, 2012 7:55 PM ET 4 - 1 Report Antigua Barracuda FC McFayden 3 18Hoxie 76 80 Byers 29Skepple 85 Sahlen's Stadium Rochester, NY 4,653 USA David Mon W Match 17 Rochester Rhinos July 7, 2012 7:05 PM ET 2 - 0 Report Dayton Dutch Lions Earls 3Kissi 90 Holowaty 90 Sahlen's Stadium Rochester, NY 5,432 USA Marc Lawrence W Match 18 Wilmington Hammerheads July 12, 2012 7:30 PM ET 0 - 0 Report Rochester Rhinos Cole 57Chijindu 0 79 Rosenlund 44Hoxie 56 Legion Stadium Wilmington, NC 3,358 D Match 19 Orlando City July 14, 2012 7:30 PM ET 4 - 0 Report Rochester Rhinos Luzunaris 10 23Jérôme 15Valentino 27López 73 pen.
