Marathon competition in New Zealand The men's marathon at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships was held in the streets of Christchurch, New Zealand on 30 January. British athlete David Weir, on January 29, pulled out of the marathon for safety reasons, as the roads around the circuit would not be closed to traffic.David Weir pulls out of IPC marathon over safety fears, BBC, 29 January 2011 He was to compete in the classification T54 event. British athlete and world record holder Richard Whitehead did not get to compete in a marathon event. He has a double leg amputation and is classified as T42. There was no T42 marathon event, because there were too few marathon runners with a single or double leg amputation. He was not allowed to run in the marathon T46 event (athletes with single above or below elbow amputation).Marathon doubts for Notts paralympian Richard Whitehead, BBC News, February 7, 2011https://archive.today/20120912015905/http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/sport/Whitehead-faces-marathon-battle-fulfil-dream/article-3198943-detail/article.html Whitehead faces a marathon battle to fulfil his dream, thisisnottingham.co.uk, February 9, 2011Craig Spence: No-legged marathon runner wasn't barred – his event simply doesn't exist in this year's Championships, insideworldparasport.biz, January 12, 2011 Medalists Medallists – MEN'S MARATHON – T11 https://web.archive.org/web/20110708150825/http://www.christchurch2011.com/results/ATM76376300000000..C92A.ENG.1.0.pdf 2011-07-08 , Official site of the 2011 IPC Athletics World ChampionshipsMedallists – MEN'S MARATHON – T12 https://web.archive.org/web/20110708150856/http://www.christchurch2011.com/results/ATM76276200000000..C92A.ENG.1.0.pdf 2011-07-08 , Official site of the 2011 IPC Athletics World ChampionshipsMedallists – MEN'S MARATHON – T46 https://web.archive.org/web/20110708151047/http://www.christchurch2011.com/results/ATM76676600000000..C92A.ENG.1.0.pdf 2011-07-08 , Official site of the 2011 IPC Athletics World ChampionshipsMedallists – MEN'S MARATHON – T54 https://web.archive.org/web/20110708151104/http://www.christchurch2011.com/results/ATM76076000000000..C92A.ENG.1.0.pdf 2011-07-08 , Official site of the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships ClassGoldSilverBronze T11 Cristian Valenzuela Andrea Cionna Shinya Wada T12 Alberto Suarez Laso Elkin Alonso Serna Moreno Masahiro Okamura ja 岡村正広 T46 Mario Santillan Hernandez Tito Sena Ozivam Bonfim T54 Kurt Fearnley Heinz Frei Masazumi Soejima T11 The Men's marathon, T11 was held on January 30 T11 = visual impairment: may range from no light perception in either eye to light perception with the inability to recognise the shape of a hand.
