First half The match was a mostly cagey affair with neither side being able to grab the ascendancy and dominate proceedings. A feisty tackle by City midfielder Luke Brattan on Michael Zullo inside the opening 10 minutes resulted in a yellow card and set the tone for aggressive hostilities between the two teams. The best chance of the first half fell to the eventual goalscorer Tim Cahill, who headed fractionally wide from a set piece in the 35th minute. Both teams had good spells of possession and entered threatening areas, though both lacked the finishing class to put their team in front.http://www.theffacup.com.au/article/tim-cahill-nets-winner-as-melbourne-city-down-sydney-fc-in-ffa-cup-final/1lx3od0yiheul1lx92m54nhihy City crowned Westfield FFA Cup 2016 winners Football Federation Australia 30 November 2016 Second half In the second half, Sydney's Alex Brosque missed an early chance and was immediately punished following a perfect cross by Ivan Franjic, which found Cahill unmarked and resulted in a header into the free opposite corner of the goal. Sydney's best chance to equalise came in the 70th minute, when Bobô headed from a Matt Simon cross into an unmarked goal; however, desperate defending on the line from defender Michael Jakobsen kept City's clean sheet intact. The match reached fever pitch in the final five minutes, with Brosque being denied a clear shot on goal due to controversial defending by City defender Osama Malik and winger Fernando Brandán squandering a golden opportunity to double the home side's lead. It mattered not however, as City hung on to claim its first ever trophy of any kind as a senior team.http://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/tim-cahill-magic-brings-melbourne-city-cup-glory-20161130-gt18qf.html FFA Cup 2016: Tim Cahill magic brings Melbourne City its first silverware The Sydney Morning Herald 30 November 2016http://www.foxsports.com.au/football/ffa-cup/ffa-cup-final-moments-that-mattered-alex-brosque-denied-late-free-kick-as-city-win-first-trophy/news-story/bc447cbd8c8ecb3ebfed9302e66753d6 FFA Cup Final moments that mattered: Alex Brosque denied late free kick as City win first trophy Fox Sports 30 November 2016 Details 30 November 2016 19:30 AEDT Melbourne City 1–0 http://www.theffacup.com.au/matchcentre/Melbourne-City-FC-v-Sydney-FC/893513 Sydney FC Cahill 53 AAMI Park, Melbourne 18,751 Peter Green _Melbourne_City_FFA_Cup_2016 87CEFA 87CEFA 87CEFA Melbourne City _navyborder _Sydney_FC_FFA_Cup_2016 _navyborder 263145 87CEEB 263145 263145 263145 Sydney FC GK 20 Dean Bouzanis AUS RB 8Neil Kilkenny AUS CB 6Osama Malik AUS CB 22Michael Jakobsen DEN LB 5Ivan Franjic AUS CDM 26Luke Brattan AUS CM 17Tim Cahill AUS 61CM 9Nicolás Colazo ARG LW 11Bruce Kamau AUS 83ST 23Bruno Fornaroli (c) URU RW 27Fernando Brandán ARG Substitutes:GK 1Thomas Sørensen DEN DF 2Manny Muscat MLT DF 4Connor Chapman AUS MF 10Anthony Cáceres AUS 61FW 12Nicholas Fitzgerald AUS 89 83Manager:John van 't Schip NED GK 20Danny Vukovic AUS RB 23Rhyan Grant AUS CB 2Sebastian Ryall AUS CB 5Matt Jurman AUS LB 7Michael Zullo AUS CDM 13Brandon O'Neill AUS 26 72CDM 6Joshua Brillante AUS LM 10Miloš Ninković SRB CAM 14Alex Brosque (c) AUS RM 21Filip Hološko SVK 62ST 9Bobô BRA Substitutes:GK 30Mitch Evans AUS DF 17David Carney AUS 87 72DF 4Alex Wilkinson AUS MF 8Miloš Dimitrijević SRB FW 18Matt Simon AUS 62Manager:Graham Arnold AUS Man of the Match (Mark Viduka Medal): Bruno Fornaroli Assistant referees: Paul Cetrangolo Nathan MacDonald Fourth official: Luke Brennan Additional assistant referees: Alan Milliner Rebecca DurcauMatch rules:FFA Cup How Draw Works http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/How-the-FFA-Cup-draw-works/86839 Football Federation Australia 24 February 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20140327115746/http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/How-the-FFA-Cup-draw-works/86839 27 March 2014 dead dmy-all 90 minutes. 30 minutes of extra time if necessary.
