It was sponsored by Continental AG, who sponsored the competition from its creation, and was officially known as the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup. All eight teams of the WSL took part. Arsenal were the defending champions from the inaugural season. To allow for more games, the format was changed from a straight knock-out to a group stage format with the top two in each group advancing to the semi-finals. Arsenal defended their title with a 1–0 win over Birmingham City in a rematch of the previous final. They thus won a double of league championship and League Cup, missing out on the Women's FA Cup.Back-to-back doubles https://www.thefa.com/leagues/superleague/newsandfeatures/2012/arsenal-birmingham-continental-cup-final-report thefa.com 4 April 2014 10 October 2012 23 December 2012 https://web.archive.org/web/20121223120225/https://www.thefa.com/leagues/superleague/newsandfeatures/2012/arsenal-birmingham-continental-cup-final-report dead Group Stage Group 1 main WDL yes Q BRI BIR EVE DON 2 1 0 6 1 2 1 0 4 1 1 0 2 1 5 0 0 3 0 4 green1 Advance to knock-out stage SF SF Birmingham City — 2–0 1–0 Bristol Academy 1–1 — — Doncaster Rovers Belles — 0–1 — Everton — 0–4 1–0 complete Birmingham City v Everton 18 March 2012 Birmingham City 1–0 https://m.football-lineups.com/match/128939/ Everton Taylor 88 pen.
