Season summary After finishing third the previous term, Arsenal battled with Preston North End in the 1952/53 season for the title, and ultimately finished level on points; however, Arsenal won the league for the seventh time on goal average, by a margin of 0.099. With Preston having won their final game of the season two days before Arsenal faced Burnley in their final match, it meant Arsenal needed to win to claim the title. Goals from Alex Forbes, Jimmy Logie and Doug Lishman ensured a 3–2 win. In the FA Cup, Arsenal beat Doncaster Rovers, Bury and Burnley before being knocked out by eventual winners Blackpool in the quarter-finals. The Gunners' biggest win was joint between the cup win over Bury and a league fixture against Derby County; both were won 6–2. Their highest scoring match was a 6–4 triumph at Reading, and their top scorer Doug Lishman, who scored 25 goals in all competitions.https://arsenalarsenal.net/2017/10/09/arsenals-top-seasons-1952-53-our-12th-best/ Arsenal's Top Seasons – 1952-53, our 12th best 9 October 2017 Final league table 1952–53 Football League#First Division First Division y ARS Results Arsenal's score comes firsthttp://www.statto.com/football/teams/arsenal/1952-1953/results Arsenal results for the 1952-1953 season 4 April 2021 https://web.archive.org/web/20160308032834/http://www.statto.com/football/teams/arsenal/1952-1953/results 8 March 2016 live dmy-all WinDrawLoss Football League First Division DateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceScorers 23 August 1952 Aston VillaA2–150,930Oakes, Lishman 27 August 1952 Manchester UnitedH2–157,831Cox, Goring 30 August 1952 SunderlandH1–256,873Lishman 3 September 1952 Manchester UnitedA0–039,193 6 September 1952 Wolverhampton WanderersA1–143,371Roper 10 September 1952 PortsmouthH3–139,743Milton, Goring, Roper 13 September 1952 Charlton AthleticH3–460,102Daniel, Milton, Goring 17 September 1952 PortsmouthA2–237,356Holton 2 20 September 1952 Tottenham HotspurA3–169,247Milton, Logie, Goring 27 September 1952 Derby CountyA0–224,582 4 October 1952 BlackpoolH3–166,642Logie, Roper 2 11 October 1952 Sheffield WednesdayH2–254,678Logie, Roper 25 October 1952 Newcastle UnitedH3–063,744Lishman, Roper 2 1 November 1952 West Bromwich AlbionA0–248,061 8 November 1952 MiddlesbroughH2–148,564Milton, Holton 15 November 1952 LiverpoolA5–145,010Holton 3, Marden 2 22 November 1952 Manchester CityH3–138,161Logie 2, Lishman 29 November 1952 Stoke CityA1–124,057Holton 13 December 1952 BurnleyA1–132,753Milton 20 December 1952 Aston VillaH3–130,064Holton, Lishman, Roper 25 December 1952 Bolton WanderersA6–445,432Daniel, Milton, Logie, Holton 2, Roper 3 January 1953 SunderlandA1–354,912Lishman 17 January 1953 Wolverhampton WanderersH5–357,983Daniel, Milton, Logie, Lishman 2 24 January 1953 Charlton AthleticA2–266,555Lishman, Roper 7 February 1953 Tottenham HotspurH4–069,051Logie, Holton 2, Lishman 18 February 1953 Derby CountyH6–232,681Daniel 2, Holton 2, Lishman 2 21 February 1953 BlackpoolA2–330,034Mercer, Goring 2 March 1953 Sheffield WednesdayA4–132,814Holton 4 7 March 1953 Cardiff CityH0–159,780 14 March 1953 Newcastle UnitedA2–251,618Lishman 2 19 March 1953 Preston North EndH1–133,597Mercer 21 March 1953 West Bromwich AlbionH2–249,078Holton, Roper 28 March 1953 MiddlesbroughA0–225,911 3 April 1953 ChelseaA1–172,614Goring 4 April 1953 LiverpoolH5–339,564Goring, Lishman, Roper 2, Hughes (og) 6 April 1953 ChelseaH2–040,536Lishman, Marden 11 April 1953 Manchester CityA4–250,018Roper, Logie, Goring 2 15 April 1953 Bolton WanderersH4–135,381Goring, Lishman 2, Marden 18 April 1953 Stoke CityH3–147,376Lishman 3 22 April 1953 Cardiff CityA0–057,893 25 April 1953 Preston North EndA0–239,537 1 May 1953 BurnleyH3–251,586Forbes, Logie, Lishman Mark Andrews Josh James Andy Kelly Arsenal: The Complete Record 2018 212 decoubertin 978-1-909245-75-4 FA Cup 1952–53 FA Cup RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersR310 January 1953 Doncaster RoversH4–057,443Logie, Holton, Lishman, RoperR431 January 1953 BuryH6–245,071Milton, Logie, Holton, Lishman, Roper, Daniel (og) R514 February 1953 BurnleyA2–052,122Holton, LishmanR628 February 1953 BlackpoolH1–269,158Logie References Category:Arsenal F.C. seasons Arsenal Category:English football championship–winning seasons
