The club competed in Division Four, as well as the Milk Cup, FA Cup and Welsh Cup. Summary Hampered by a serious financial crisis, Hereford parted company with manager Frank Lord by mutual consent before the end of September. Tommy Hughes took charge in a caretaker capacity until the appointment in March of Hereford-born John Newman, whose most recent role had been as manager of Derby County following the sacking of Colin Addison. Hereford were winless from their opening 11 league and cup matches and remained in the re-election zone for the entire season. They would have avoided finishing in last place had they taken a point or more from their final match, at home to Peterborough United, but an 89th-minute winner by the visitors' Pat Rayment was the final indignity of a turbulent campaign. During the course of the season, Hereford used six different goalkeepers, four of whom were making their full Football League debut. A seventh, Mick Kearns (brother of future Hereford player Ollie Kearns), appeared in the Herefordshire Senior Cup final against Newport County after first-choice keeper Drew Brand walked out on the club during pre-season.Parrott 1998 71–75 Squad Players who made one appearance or more for Hereford United F.C. during the 1982-83 season Pos.Nat.NameLeagueMilk CupFA CupWelsh CupTotalAppsGoalsAppsGoalsAppsGoalsAppsGoalsAppsGoalsGKENGMel Gwinnett1000000010GKENGJohn Jackson4020000060GKENGGary Plumley130001000140GKWALAndy Powell4000002060GKENGKevin Rose150000020170GKWALRhys Wilmot (on loan from Arsenal)9000000090DFENGDanny Bartley39(2)020002043(2)0DFENGIan Bray26(1)000104031(1)0DFENGKeith Hicks390101040450DFENGTony Larkin100000000100DFPOLAdam Musial4(2)010000(1)05(3)0DFENGMel Pejic451211041523DFENGChris Price41(1)520103147(1)6DFSCOIan Ross150001040200MFENGLen Cantello (on loan from Bolton Wanderers)1000000010MFENGMike Carter (on loan from Plymouth Argyle)100000000100MFENGJohn Crabbe15(1)220101119(1)3MFNIRJimmy Harvey415200(1)04247(1)7MFENGSean Lane26(6)30(1)0102(1)029(8)3MFWALPaul Maddy (on loan from Cardiff City)9100000091MFENGPeter Spiring16(2)120000018(2)1MFENGWinston White35(2)320104142(2)4FWENGDixie McNeil123001022155FWENGStewart Phillips411420002(1)645(1)20FWWALDerek Showers30(2)221113036(2)4FWSCOJohn Teasdale510000106(1)1 Parrott 1998 232–233Rothmans 1983-84 189–190 League table Fourth Division y HER Results Fourth Division 1982–83 Football League 1 28 August 1982 Bury 3–2 L Hereford United Hilton 5Gore 67Bramhall 88 Price 30Crabbe 83 Gigg Lane Bury 2,138 2 4 September 1982 Hereford United 0–0 D Colchester United Edgar Street Hereford 2,465 3 8 September 1982 Hereford United 1–2 L Swindon Town Harvey 38 pen.
