The 1973 NBA draft was the 27th annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on April 24 and May 5, 1973, before the 1973–74 season.1 In this draft, 17 NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The first two picks in the draft belonged to the teams that finished last in each conference, with the order determined by a coin flip.http://www.nba.com/history/draft_evolution.html Evolution of the Draft and Lottery March 20, 2010 NBA.com Turner Sports Interactive, Inc https://web.archive.org/web/20100321141751/http://www.nba.com/history/draft_evolution.html March 21, 2010 dead The Philadelphia 76ers won the coin flip and were awarded the first overall pick, while the Portland Trail Blazers were awarded the second pick. Early entrants College underclassmen For the third year in a row, the NBA would implement the hardship exception for college underclassmen following the results of the 1971 NBA draft's event. Originally, twelve college underclassmen signed up for this year's event, but the University of Maryland's Len Elmore, Southern California Community College's Mallory Mitchell, and St. John's Ed Searcy would all later decline their entries into this draft. In addition to them, one of the ABA's players in David Brent from the Carolina Cougars (previously last played for Jacksonville University) would also declare his entry into this NBA draft, with him later being selected by the Los Angeles Lakers this year in the sixth round. The following college basketball players successfully applied for an NBA hardship.1973 Underclassmen Hardship List https://www.thedraftreview.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3020:1973-underclassmen&catid=136&Itemid=384 The Draft Review August 4, 2007 December 11, 2022 December 11, 2022 https://web.archive.org/web/20221211055616/https://www.thedraftreview.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3020:1973-underclassmen&catid=136&Itemid=384 live USA Bird Averitt – G, Pepperdine (junior) USA Larry Harris – F, Genesee Community College (sophomore) USA Dwight Jones – Houston (junior) USA Larry Kenon – F, Memphis (junior) USA Raymond Lewis – G, Cal State Los Angeles (sophomore) USA Arnold Mast – G, Southwestern Bible College (freshman) USA Larry McNeill – F, Marquette (junior) USA John Williamson – G, New Mexico State (junior) Notes 1 NBA commissioner Walter Kennedy originally awarded Seattle SuperSonics's fourth overall pick in the first round to the Philadelphia 76ers in compensation for John Brisker, who signed with the Sonics despite being on Philadelphia's negotiation list. However, the federal court invalidated Kennedy's decision, ruling that only the NBA Board of Governors had the power to do so. Subsequently, the Board decided to award the 76ers with an extra first-round draft pick and the Sonics' second-round pick as compensations. The Sonics maintained possession of the fourth pick. In addition, the date of the draft, which was originally scheduled for April 16, was postponed to April 24.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=R_EoAAAAIBAJ&sjid=-X0DAAAAIBAJ&pg=6784,3624622 NBA Calls Delay in Draft Plan Deseret News Salt Lake City April 14, 1973 May 4, 2010October 2017 InternetArchiveBot yes 2 Mike D'Antoni was born in the United States, but he has represented the Italian national team.http://www.nba.com/coachfile/mike_dantoni/ Mike D'Antony Bio NBA.com Turner Sports Interactive, Inc August 22, 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20100914221313/http://www.nba.com/coachfile/mike_dantoni/ September 14, 2010 dead See also List of first overall NBA draft picks References General http://www.nba.com/history/draft_round1_1970s.html Complete First Round Results 1970–79 NBA.com Turner Sports Interactive, Inc April 1, 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20100321192426/http://www.nba.com/history/draft_round1_1970s.html March 21, 2010 dead https://www.basketball-reference.com/draft/NBA_1973.html 1973 NBA Draft basketball-reference.com April 1, 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20100325033838/http://www.basketball-reference.com/draft/NBA_1973.html March 25, 2010 live http://www.apbr.org/7276drft.html 1972–1976 NBA Drafts The Association for Professional Basketball Research April 1, 2010 September 17, 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20100917082037/http://apbr.org/7276drft.html live Specific 30em External links NBA.com NBA.com: NBA Draft History Draft Category:NBA draft NBA draft NBA draft NBA draft Category:Basketball in New York City Category:Sporting events in New York City
