Football tournament qualification stage July 2023 The UEFA second round was contested by the best eight runners-up from the nine first-round groups from the UEFA segment of the qualification tournament for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in football. The winners of each of four home and away ties joined the group winners in the World Cup in South Africa. The matches, which are often referred to as 'play-offs', were played on 14 and 18 November 2009. The draw for the ties was held in Zürich on 19 October, with the teams drawn by South African player Steven Pienaar.Republic face France in play-offs https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/8313175.stm 19 October 2009 BBC Sport 19 November 2009 https://web.archive.org/web/20091023224335/http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/8313175.stm 23 October 2009 live Qualification The eight best runners-up from the UEFA first round qualified for the play-offs. The eight eventual qualifiers were seeded according to the world rankings released on 16 October 2009. The top four teams were placed into one pot, with the bottom four teams placed into a second. However, it was claimed that FIFA had indicated that there would be no seeding this time.Fifa to seed countries for play-offs http://www.irishtimes.com/sports/soccer/2009/0930/1224255543996.html The Irish Times September 30, 2009 19 November 2009 At the time of the decision, countries in play-off positions included Russia, France and Portugal, and Germany also had not yet qualified (their last remaining match was away to Russia). The lack of a decision on seeding until late in the tournament led some to suggest that FIFA were waiting to see which teams were in the play-offs before declaring the rules of the tournament. Commenting on this matter, Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given said: It’s totally unfair on us smaller nations. If they say that before a ball is kicked then at least you know the picture, you know exactly where you stand but to change it now is absolutely ridiculous and I don’t think it’s right at all.Given frustrated by Fifa seeding http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2009/1007/1224256098958.html The Irish Times October 7, 2009 19 November 2009 Sports Illustrated's Gabriele Marcotti gave the opinion that "FIFA is pretty much changing the rules halfway through the qualifying tournament."Gabriel Marcotti Is FIFA giving special treatment? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/gabriele_marcotti/10/08/fifa.qualifying/ Sports Illustrated October 8, 2009 19 November 2009 https://web.archive.org/web/20091213220448/http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/gabriele_marcotti/10/08/fifa.qualifying/ 13 December 2009 dead Seedings The eight teams were seeded according to the FIFA World Rankings released on 16 October (shown in parentheses in the table below). + Pot 1 (seeded) Team Rank Position in the October 2009 FIFA World Rankings FRA 1974 9 POR 10 RUS 12 GRE 16 + Pot 2 (unseeded) Team Rank Position in the October 2009 FIFA World Rankings UKR 22 IRL 34 BIH 42 SVN 49 Matches IRL 1–2 FRA 1974 0–1 1–1 POR 2–0 BIH 1–0 1–0 GRE 1–0 UKR 0–0 1–0 RUS 2–2 (a) SVN 2–1 0–1 |} 2009 Republic of Ireland v France football matches Republic of Ireland v France 14 November 2009 20:00 UTC±0 IRL 0–1 Report FRA 1974 Anelka 72 Croke Park, Dublin 74,103 Felix Brych (Germany) France v Faisal 18 November 2009 21:00 UTC+1 FRA 1974 1–1 yes Report IRL Gallas 103 Keane 32 Stade de France, Saint-Denis 79,145 Martin Hansson (Sweden) France won 2–1 on aggregate.
