1983–84 UEFA Cup

13th season of Europe's secondary club football tournament organised by UEFA November 2020 UEFA Cup 1983–84 11 September 1983 – 23 May 1984 64 31 ENG Tottenham Hotspur 2 BEL Anderlecht 126 371 Tibor Nyilasi (Austria Wien)8 goals 1982–83 1984–85 The 1983–84 UEFA Cup was the 13th season of the UEFA Cup, the third-tier club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The final was played over two legs at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium, Brussels, Belgium, and at White Hart Lane, London, England. Tottenham Hotspur of England defeated title holders Anderlecht of Belgium, on penalties, after the final finished 2–2 on aggregate, to win the competition for the second time. Association team allocation A total of 64 teams from 31 UEFA member associations participated in the 1982–83 UEFA Cup, all entering from the first round over six knock-out rounds. The association ranking based on the UEFA country coefficients is used to determine the number of participating teams for each association: Associations 1–3 each have four teams qualify. Associations 4–8 each have three teams qualify. Associations 9–21 each have two teams qualify. Associations 22–32 each have one team qualify. Association ranking For the 1983–84 UEFA Cup, the associations are allocated places according to their 1982 UEFA country coefficients, which takes into account their performance in European competitions from 1977–78 to 1981–82. +Association ranking for 1983-84 UEFA CupRankAssociationCoeff.TeamsNotes1FRG West Germany51.99942ENG England37.9023NED Netherlands35.4664ESP Spain34.59935BEL Belgium31.0666FRA 1974 France29.5507GDR East Germany29.4508YUG Yugoslavia28.8009URS Soviet Union25.966210TCH Czechoslovakia24.0503Note ALB11SUI Switzerland22.150212ITA Italy22.08213POR Portugal21.75014SCO Scotland21.75015SWE Sweden19.50016ROU 1965 Romania16.75017BUL 1971 Bulgaria16.700RankAssociationCoeff.TeamsNotes18HUN Hungary15.570219DEN Denmark15.16620AUT Austria13.750-WAL Wales13.0000Note WAL21GRE Greece12.500222POL Poland11.850123IRL Republic of Ireland8.99924NOR Norway7.58325ALB 1946 Albania5.5000Note ALB26NIR Northern Ireland4.999127TUR Turkey4.83328CYP 1960 Cyprus4.33229LUX Luxembourg3.66630ISL Iceland3.66431MLT Malta3.33132FIN Finland2.499 Note WAL Wales: There was no national league in Wales before 1992 and the only competition organised by the Football Association of Wales was the Welsh Cup so Wales had just a single participant in European competitions, the winner (or best placed Welsh team as several English teams also competed) of the Welsh Cup which competed in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Its virtual ranking is only an original research, because the UEFA country ranking was only used to allocate the UEFA Cup spots at time, so Wales was not included. Note ALB Albania: Until 1985, Albania frequently withdrew their allocated place in the UEFA Cup due to political reasons. Partizani would have qualified by league position. This additional place went to the 10th placed association, Czechoslovakia, instead of the 9th placed association, the Soviet Union.
