Schedule and results The Tar Heels began the season ranked atop both major polls, and stayed there for the first two months of the season despite closer-than-expected games against Davidson and Clemson. They suffered their first loss of the season against Maryland on January 19. Three games later, point guard Ty Lawson twisted his ankle and missed most of February. Despite this, the Tar Heels didn't miss a beat, going 8–1 the rest of the way. They regained the top spot in the polls in late February and held it for the rest of the season. They clinched their 26th ACC regular season title by avenging their earlier loss to Duke in the last game of the season. In the ACC Tournament held in Charlotte, the top-seeded Tar Heels defeated Florida State, Virginia Tech and Clemson to win their 17th conference tournament title. In so doing, they went into the NCAA Tournament with a 32–2 record—the most wins going into the tourney in school history. In the NCAA Tournament, the Tar Heels were seeded first in the East Regional, and were also the overall top seed in the tournament. They routed Mount St. Mary's and Arkansas while playing just 30 minutes from campus at the RBC Center in Raleigh. They were no less dominant in the regional phase in Charlotte, scoring convincing wins over Washington State and Louisville to make their 17th trip to the Final Four, but in their national semifinal game, they lost to Kansas, who went on to win the national championship. Remarkably, the Tar Heels made the Final Four while not having to leave the state of North Carolina for a little over a month (a total of 10 games), and while notching two losses at the Smith Center—an arena where they have traditionally been all but unbeatable. They also set a school record for wins in a season, with 36. With Memphis having its 38-win 2007–08 season vacated by the NCAA, the 2007–08 Tar Heels' 36 wins are now the second-most in Division I history. yes |- !colspan=9| Exhibition November 3 8:15 p.m. w yes 1 2007–08 Shaw Bears Shaw University Shaw Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC 114–62 19,343 November 9 7:30 p.m. w yes 1 2007–08 Lenoir-Rhyne Bears Lenoir-Rhyne College Lenoir-Rhyne Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC 107–52 18,357 |- !colspan=9| Regular Season November 14 7:00 p.m. w yes yes 1 Davidson Charlotte Bobcats Arena Charlotte, NC ESPN 72–68 19,299 1–0 |- !colspan=9| Las Vegas Invitational November 18 6:00 p.m. w yes 1 2007–08 Iona Gaels Iona College (New York) Iona Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC Las Vegas Invitational ESPNU 107–72 18,970 2–0 November 20 7:30 p.m. w yes 1 2007–08 South Carolina State Bulldogs South Carolina State University South Carolina State Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC Las Vegas Invitational 110–64 18,318 3–0 November 23 11:55 p.m. w yes yes 1 Old Dominion Orleans Arena Las Vegas, NV Las Vegas Invitational ESPNU 99–82 5,500 4–0 November 24 10:30 p.m. w yes yes 1 Brigham Young Orleans Arena Las Vegas, NV Las Vegas Invitational ESPN 73–63 5,500 5–0 |- !colspan=9| November 28 9:00 p.m. w yes yes 1 Ohio State Value City Arena Columbus, OH ACC–Big Ten Challenge ESPN 66–55 19,049 6–0 December 1 2:00 p.m. w yes yes 1 Kentucky Rupp Arena Lexington, KY ESPN2 86–77 24,252 7–0 December 4 7:00 p.m. w yes yes 1 2007–08 Penn Quakers University of Pennsylvania Penn The Palestra Philadelphia, PA ESPN2 106–71 8,722 8–0 December 16 8:00 p.m. w yes yes 1 2007–08 Rutgers Scarlet Knights Rutgers University Rutgers Louis Brown Athletic Center Piscataway, NJ ESPN 93–71 8,312 9–0 December 19 9:00 p.m. w yes 1 2007–08 Nicholls State Colonels Nicholls State University Nicholls State Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC ESPNU 88–78 17,706 10–0 December 22 1:00 p.m. w yes 1 2007–08 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos University of California at Santa Barbara UC Santa Barbara Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC FSN 105–70 20,520 11–0 December 27 7:00 p.m. w yes 1 2007–08 Nevada Wolf Pack University of Nevada Nevada Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC ESPN2 106–70 21,750 12–0 December 30 7:30 p.m. w yes 1 Valparaiso Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC FSN 90–58 21,046 13–0 January 2 8:00 p.m. w yes 1 Kent State Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC ESPN 90–61 20,356 14–0 January 6 7:30 p.m. w yes 1 Clemson 19 Littlejohn Coliseum Clemson, SC FSN 90–88 OT 10,000 15–0 1–0 January 9 7:00 p.m. w yes 1 2007–08 UNC Asheville Bulldogs University of North Carolina at Asheville UNC Asheville Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC ESPNU 93–81 20,326 16–0 1–0 January 12 12:00 p.m. w 1 2007–08 NC State Wolfpack North Carolina State University North Carolina State Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC ESPN 93–62 21,750 17–0 2–0 January 16 9:00 p.m. w yes 1 Georgia Tech Alexander Memorial Coliseum Atlanta, GA ESPN 83–82 9,191 18–0 3–0 January 19 3:30 p.m. l 1 Maryland Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC ABC 80–82 21,033 18–1 3–1 January 23 9:00 p.m. w yes 5 Miami (FL) BankUnited Center Coral Gables, FL Raycom 98–82 7,000 19–1 4–1 January 31 7:00 p.m. w 4 Boston College Dean Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC ESPN 91–69 21,247 20–1 5–1 February 3 2:00 p.m. w yes 4 Florida State Donald L.
