The Red Wings scored 110 points, winning the Central Division, but just one point behind the Dallas Stars for the Western Conference's first seed. Coming off their latest Stanley Cup victory, the Red Wings started looking towards the future. Dominik Hasek and Scotty Bowman had retired over the summer and captain Steve Yzerman was out for the first 66 games of the regular season. The weight of the team fell on Sergei Fedorov and veteran Brett Hull, who helped the Red Wings score the most goals of any team in the regular season. As newly acquired goaltender Curtis Joseph held steady in net, two more pieces of the Stanley Cup team would be traded over the course of the year. Maxim Kuznetsov and Sean Avery left in a trade for the Los Angeles Kings' Mathieu Schneider right before the trade deadline in an effort to push the Wings towards the playoffs. However, the moves did not come to complete fruition, as the Wings entered the 2003 playoffs by finding themselves pitted against the seventh-seeded Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.2002-2003 NHL Hockey Standings https://www.nhl.com/standings/2002 National Hockey League September 21, 2017 https://web.archive.org/web/20160305204239/https://www.nhl.com/standings/2002 March 5, 2016 deadDetroit falls to second seed in West https://www.espn.com/nhl/recap?gameId=230406004 ESPN.com Associated Press April 6, 2003 https://web.archive.org/web/20180926205500/https://www.espn.com/nhl/recap?gameId=230406004 September 26, 2018 January 22, 2020Ducks-Red Wings Playoff History https://www.nhl.com/ducks/news/ducks-red-wings-playoff-history/c-469669 Anaheim Ducks April 28, 2009 September 16, 2017 September 16, 2017 https://web.archive.org/web/20170916182721/https://www.nhl.com/ducks/news/ducks-red-wings-playoff-history/c-469669 dead The Mighty Ducks shocked the hockey world when they swept the Red Wings in four games en route to their first ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance.Ducks knock off defending champs in four games https://www.espn.com/nhl/recap?gameId=230416025 ESPN.com Associated Press April 21, 2003 https://web.archive.org/web/20180926170303/http://www.espn.com/nhl/recap?gameId=230416025 September 26, 2018 January 22, 2020Devils dominant at home again to win Cup https://www.espn.com/nhl/recap?gameId=230609011 ESPN.com Associated Press June 10, 2003 https://web.archive.org/web/20190328191641/http://www.espn.com/nhl/recap?gameId=230609011 March 28, 2019 January 22, 2020 Three Red Wings were named to the roster for the 2003 All-Star Game: defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom, center Sergei Fedorov and head coach Dave Lewis.
