1973 Davis Cup

1973 edition of the Davis Cup January 2025 1973 Davis Cup 10 November 1972 – 2 December 1973 62nd 53 AUS 1972 1974 The 1973 Davis Cup was the 62nd edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. Fifty-three teams entered the competition, 31 in the Europe Zone, 12 in the Americas Zone, and 10 in the Eastern Zone. For the first time, preliminary rounds were used in every zone, effectively giving byes through the first two rounds of competition to the previous year's finalists from the American and Eastern zones, and to the previous year's semifinalists from the European zones. This year's competition also marked the first time that professional tennis players were allowed to compete. The United States defeated Chile in the Americas Inter-Zonal final, Australia defeated India in the Eastern Zone final, and Czechoslovakia and Romania were the winners of the two Europe Zones, defeating the Soviet Union and Italy respectively. In the Inter-Zonal Zone, Australia defeated Czechoslovakia and the United States defeated Romania in the semifinals. Australia then defeated the United States in the final, breaking the defending champions' five-year winning run. The final was held at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio, United States on 30 November-2 December. It marked the first time that the final was held indoors.Bud Collins The Bud Collins History of Tennis 2010 New Chapter Press [New York] 978-0942257700 495–496, 499 2ndThe Encyclopedia of Tennis 1974 Allen & Unwin London 0047960426 Max Robertson 384 Americas Zone 1973 Davis Cup Americas Zone North & Central America Zone Preliminary rounds 2 y 23–25 February 9–11 March First Round Qualifying Round Bogotá, Colombia (clay) COL 4 CAN 1 Bogotá, Colombia COL 3 Caribbean/West Indies 2 Mexico City, Mexico (clay) MEX 4 VEN 1954 1 Main Draw y 23–25 March 11–13 May Mexico City, Mexico (clay) MEX 5 COL 0 Mexico City, Mexico (clay) USA 4 MEX 1 South America Zone Preliminary rounds 2 y 23–25 February 2–4 March; 23–25 March First Round Qualifying Round y Buenos Aires, Argentina (clay) ARG 5 ECU 1900 0 Buenos Aires, Argentina (clay) ARG 4 BRA 1968 1 Punta del Este, Uruguay URU 0 RSA 1928 5 Main Draw y 13–15 April 4–6 May Montevideo, Uruguay (clay) ARG 4 RSA 1928 1 Buenos Aires, Argentina (clay) CHI 3 ARG 2 Americas Inter-Zonal Final United States vs. Chile United States Chile Burns Park Tennis Club, North Little Rock, Arkansas, United Stateshttps://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx?id=M-DC-1973-AMI-M-USA-CHI-01 United States v Chile daviscup.com 3–5 August 1973 Hard 4 0 Tom Gorman 17 6 4 6 Jaime Fillol 15 4 6 3 Stan Smith 7 6 8 6 Patricio Cornejo 9 2 6 4 Stan Smith Erik van Dillen 7 37 8 6 6 Patricio Cornejo Jaime Fillol 9 39 6 1 3 Tom Gorman 6 6 6 Patricio Cornejo 3 1 1 Stan Smith Jaime Fillol The doubles match between Smith/van Dillen and Cornejo/Fillol set the Davis Cup record for the most games in a doubles rubber (122).
