International tennis competition 1998 Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone The Europe/Africa Zone was one of the three zones of the regional Davis Cup competition in 1998. In the Europe/Africa Zone there were four different tiers, called groups, in which teams competed against each other to advance to the upper tier. Winners in Group I advanced to the World Group qualifying round, along with losing teams from the World Group first round. Teams who lost in the first round competed in the relegation play-offs, with winning teams remaining in Group I, whereas teams who lost their play-offs were relegated to the Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 1999.https://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/historic-format/group-i/europe-africa.aspx#/1998 1998 Europe/Africa Group I DavisCup.com 11 June 2020 Participating nations 30em AUT CRO DEN FIN FRA GBR ISR NOR ROU UKR Draw y 175 2 5 Second Round Play-offs First Round Play-offs First Round Second Round 25–27 September 13–15 February 3–5 April FRA bye Helsinki, Finland (hard) CRO 2 FIN 3 ROU bye bye NOR ISR bye bye AUT Kyiv, Ukraine (indoor carpet) UKR 3 DEN 2 bye GBR CRO bye bye NOR AUT bye DEN bye Helsinki, Finland (indoor carpet) FRA 4 FIN 1 Bucharest, Romania (indoor hard) ROU 4 NOR 1 Ramat HaSharon, Israel (hard) ISR 4 AUT 1 Newcastle, England (indoor carpet) UKR 0 GBR 5 Oslo, Norway (clay) CRO 3 NOR 2 Pörtschach, Austria (clay) AUT 5 DEN 0 NOR and DEN relegated to Group II in 1999.
