1923 International Lawn Tennis Challenge

1923 edition of the International Lawn Tennis Challenge January 2025 1923 International Lawn Tennis Challenge 15 May – 3 September 1923 18th 17 USA 1912 1922 1924 The 1923 International Lawn Tennis Challenge was the 18th edition of what is now known as the Davis Cup. For the first time, the competition was split into two zones: the America Zone and the Europe Zone. This change was necessitated by having more than 16 teams compete for the cup (thus not fitting into one easily workable draw). The past several years had also seen a rise in the number of defaults, as teams from around the globe tried to work out the logistics of playing such an international tournament. Regional zones would help alleviate these problems. The Europe Zone consisted of 13 teams, while the America Zone was made up of 4 teams. Australia, Hawaii, Ireland and Switzerland competed for the first and only time. The winners of the Zones met in an Inter-Zonal play-off, with the winner challenging defending champions the United States for the championship. Australia defeated France in the Inter-Zonal play-off, but again lost to the United States in the Challenge Round. The final was played at the West Side Tennis Club in New York City on 31 August – 3 September.Bud Collins The Bud Collins History of Tennis 2010 New Chapter Press [New York] 978-0942257700 495–506 2nd America Zone 1923 International Lawn Tennis Challenge America Zone Draw 26–28 July 9–12 August Orange, NJ, United States (grass) AUS 4 Hawaii 1 Montreal, Canada (grass) CAN 1921 0 JPN 1870 5 Chicago, IL, United States (grass) AUS 4 JPN 1870 1 Final Australia vs. Japan Australia Japan 1870 South Side Tennis Club, Chicago, IL, United Stateshttps://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx?id=M-DC-1923-AME-M-AUS-JPN-01 Australia v Japan daviscup.com 9–12 August 1923 Grass 4 1 James Anderson 6 6 6 Zenzo Shimizu 0 3 3 John Hawkes 6 6 6 Masanosuke Fukuda 3 4 3 James Anderson John Hawkes 6 6 6 Seiichiro Kashio Zenzo Shimizu 1 2 2 John Hawkes 4 6 6 1 4 Zenzo Shimizu 6 3 2 6 6 James Anderson 6 3 6 6 Masanosuke Fukuda 1 6 2 1 Europe Zone 1923 International Lawn Tennis Challenge Europe Zone Draw First Round 15 May–4 June 1–23 June 9–15 July 28 July–1 August NED bye ITA 1861 bye Brussels, Belgium (clay) GBR 3 BEL 2 ESP 1785 w/o ROU Bordeaux, France (clay) FRA 1830 4 DEN 1 Dublin, Ireland (grass) IRL 3 IND British 2 Territet, Switzerland SUI 3 TCH 2 bye ARG Noordwijk, Netherlands (clay) NED 5 ITA 1861 0 Manchester, England (grass) GBR 2 ESP 1785 3 Dublin, Ireland (grass) FRA 1830 4 IRL 1 Geneva, Switzerland SUI 4 ARG 1 Eastbourne, England (grass) NED 0 ESP 1785 5 Lyon, France (clay) FRA 1830 3 SUI 2 Deauville, France (clay) ESP 1785 2 FRA 1830 3 Final France vs. Spain France 1830 Spain 1785 Sporting Club, Deauville, Francehttps://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx?id=M-DC-1923-EUR-M-FRA-ESP-01 France v Spain daviscup.com 28 July – 1 August 1923 Clay 3 2 René Lacoste 6 6 5 6 Manuel de Gomar 3 4 7 4 Jean-François Blanchy 6 6 3 6 Eduardo Flaquer 1 2 6 1 Jacques Brugnon Henri Cochet 4 6 13 6 4 Eduardo Flaquer Manuel de Gomar 6 8 11 1 6 René Lacoste 6 6 6 Eduardo Flaquer 1 3 2 Jean-François Blanchy 3 6 2 2 Manuel de Gomar 6 2 6 6 Inter-Zonal Final Australia vs. France Australia France 1830 Longwood Cricket Club, Boston, MA, United Stateshttps://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx?id=M-DC-1923-INZ-M-AUS-FRA-01 Australia v France daviscup.com 16–18 August 1923 Grass 4 1 James Anderson 7 6 6 René Lacoste 5 3 4 John Hawkes 6 6 7 Jacques Brugnon 2 1 5 James Anderson John Hawkes 6 6 6 6 9 Jacques Brugnon René Lacoste 8 3 3 8 7 James Anderson 7 6 6 Pierre Hirsch 5 2 0 Ian McInnes 2 1 2 René Lacoste 6 6 6 Challenge Round United States vs. Australia United States 1912 Australia West Side Tennis Club, New York, NY, United Stateshttps://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx?id=M-DC-1923-WG-CHR-USA-AUS-01 United States v Australia daviscup.com 31 August–3 September 1923 Grass 4 1 Bill Johnston 6 2 6 5 2 James Anderson 4 6 2 7 6 Bill Tilden 6 6 6 John Hawkes 4 2 1 Bill Tilden Richard Norris Williams 17 11 2 6 6 James Anderson John Hawkes 15 13 6 3 2 Bill Johnston 6 6 6 John Hawkes 0 2 1 Bill Tilden 6 6 1 7 James Anderson 2 3 6 5 See also 1923 Wightman Cup References External links Davis Cup official website https://web.archive.org/web/20101018182625/http://www.daviscup.com/ October 18, 2010 Category:Davis Cups by year International Lawn Tennis Challenge International Lawn Tennis Challenge
