American college football season August 2023 February 2026 1952 Stanford Indians football Pacific Coast Conference PCC 5–5 2–5 Chuck Taylor 2nd Stanford Stadium The 1952 Stanford Indians football team represented Stanford University in the 1952 college football season. The team was led by head coach Chuck Taylor in his second year and played their home games at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California. After winning the conference and making it to the Rose Bowl in the previous season, the team was ranked No. 13 in preseason polls. After winning their first four games, the team lost five of the last six games, including a 26–0 Big Game shutout—its worst loss to rival California in more than half a century—to finish well out of the conference championship. Running back Bob Mathias, who had won his second gold medal in the decathlon earlier in the summer at the 1952 Summer Olympics, was Stanford's only 1953 NFL draft selection.https://alumni.stanford.edu/get/page/magazine/article/?article_id=33376 The Champion Stanford Magazine November–December 2006 August 5, 2014 Eule Brian Schedule 1952 AP September 20 w y 13 Santa Clara Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA 28–13 27,500 Cards Slap Broncs, 28–13: Stanford Roars From 'Way Back to Nail It The San Francisco Examiner Bob Brachman September 21, 1952 37 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/99924965/cards-slap-broncs-28-13-stanford/ Newspapers.com September 27 w y 13 Washington State 15 Rogers Field Pullman, WA 14–13 25,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-commercial-appeal-blocked-extra-poin/189140421/ The Commercial Appeal Blocked extra point saves Stanford upset September 28, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com October 4 w y Michigan Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA 14–7 45,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/press-of-atlantic-city-45000-see-michig/189141905/ Atlantic City Press 45,000 see Michigan surprised, 14–7, by Stanford gridders October 5, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com October 11 w Oregon State Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA 41–28 28,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-san-bernardino-county-sun-stanford-t/189142059/ San Bernardino Sun-Telegram Stanford tops OSC October 12, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com October 18 l y 13 UCLA 10 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Los Angeles, CA 14–24 80,617 https://www.newspapers.com/article/pasadena-independent-bruins-top-tribe-2/189138096/ Pasadena Independent Bruins top Tribe, 24–14 October 19, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com October 25 l Washington Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA 14–27 25,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-register-peerless-heinrich-passes-wa/189142410/ The Register Peerless Heinrich passes Washington to upset 27–14 win over Stanford October 26, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com November 1 w y San Jose State Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA rivalry 35–13 20,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/san-francisco-chronicle-indians-thump-sh/189142578/ San Francisco Chronicle Indians thump shaky Spartans, 35–13 November 2, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com November 8 l USC 6 Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA rivalry 7–54 45,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-houston-chronicle-trojans-rip-stanfo/189137189/ The Houston Chronicle Trojans rip Stanford by 54–7 score November 9, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com November 15 l Oregon Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA 20–21 6,100 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-sunday-oregonian-oregon-upsets-stanf/164912745/ The Sunday Oregonian Oregon upsets Stanford Indians, 21 to 20: Sparse crowd watches clubs play thriller Don McLeod 1, 5 November 16, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com November 22 l y California California Memorial Stadium Berkeley, CA Big Game 0–26 83,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-spokesman-review-golden-bears-trip-o/189140068/ The Spokesman-Review Golden Bears trip oldest rivals, 26–0 November 23, 1952 January 17, 2026 Newspapers.com 1952 Stanford Cardinal Schedule and Results https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/stanford/1952-schedule.html College Football at Sports-Reference.com Sports Reference January 17, 2026 Players drafted by the NFL Player Position Round Pick NFL club Bob Mathias Back 30 352 Washington Redskins https://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/1953.htm 1953 NFL Draft August 5, 2014 October 30, 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20101030104143/http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/1953.htm dead References Stanford Category:Stanford Cardinal football seasons Stanford Indians football
