If a councillor were elected an alderman, he had to forfeit his seat. Eleven members of the council were elected to the aldermanic bench, which meant that their seats became vacant, triggering by-elections. Colonel Willson, who had been returned for Wilsford at the first round of elections, was disqualified because he held a paid commission in the armed forces; this triggered a by-election. All twelve were held on 18 February; four candidates stood unopposed.http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000400/18890223/061/0006 Kesteven County Council: the recent elections Grantham Journal 23 February 1889 6 British Newspaper Archive 26 April 2015 subscription Grantham no. 2 Grantham no. 2 Liberal Party (UK) William Scoffield 198 Conservative Party (UK) Alfred Childs 184 382 Barrowby Barrowby Conservative Party (UK) Richard Welborn 245 Liberal Party (UK) Henry Bowman 168 413 Ponton Ponton R.
