MV Agusta rider Phil Read won four of ten rounds to successfully defend his 500cc World Championship in 1974 however, the MV Agusta team no longer dominated the series as they faced increasingly strong opposition from the Japanese manufacturers.Dennis Noyes 1999 Michael Scott Motocourse: 50 Years Of Moto Grand Prix Hazleton Publishing Ltd 1-874557-83-7 Before the start of the season, Giacomo Agostini made the decision to leave the MV Agusta team to accept an offer to race for the Yamaha factory racing team. Gianfranco Bonera replaced Agostini on the MV Agusta team after Barry Sheene rejected their contract offer to join the Italian team.https://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/barry-sheene-36333.html Barry Sheene obituary at The Independent Mac McDiarmid independent.co.uk 4 October 2026 11 March 2003 Read and Bonera competed on the four-stroke MV 500. Hideo Kanaya was due to be Agostini's Yamaha teammate for the 1974 season however, he suffered serious injuries while competing in the pre-season Daytona 200 motorcycle race and, he was forced to withdraw from the championship as he recovered from his injuries. Suzuki introduced the Suzuki RG 500 for riders Barry Sheene and Jack Findlay. Safety continued to be an issue with most riders boycotting the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring as the track had not been fitted with straw bales to accommodate automobile racing on the same day. Thus, rather unknown German riders took all wins. The boycott served as a focal point in the increasingly bitter debate about safety in the wake of the deaths of Jarno Saarinen and Renzo Pasolini in 1973.
Agostini won the third round in Austria then, was leading the Nations Grand Prix with two laps remaining when he ran out of fuel, allowing Bonera to take the victory. Phil Carpenter won the fifth round at the 1974 Isle of Man TT as most of the championship contenders continued to boycott the event over safety concerns. Agostini won again at the Dutch TT but then Read reclaimed the championship points lead with a resounding victory at the 500cc Belgian Grand Prix where he set a record average lap speed of 220.121 km/h (136.777 mph), finishing over one minute ahead of Agostini in second place.Sam Hewitt 2017 Classic GP: Spa-Francorcamps 1974 Classic Racer Mortons Motorcycle Media Ltd 0959-7123 At the 500cc Swedish Grand Prix, Agostini suffered a broken shoulder after colliding with Barry Sheene, allowing his Yamaha teammate Länsivuori to take the victory while Read capitalized on Agostini's misfortune by finishing in second place.
Read took advantage of Agostini's continued misfortune by scoring maximum points with a victory at the Finnish Grand Prix while Agostini recovered from his injury. Agostini returned to compete in the season finale in Czechoslovakia but only managed a sixth-place finish while Read won again to claim his second consecutive 500cc World Championship.https://www.motogp.com/en/riders/phil-read/7bdcbfe1-ce1e-4bc2-8a2f-f3f31853d139 Phil Read career statistics at MotoGP.com Motogp.com 6 December 2023 The 35-year-old Read was the oldest 500cc World Champion since Leslie Graham won the title in 1949 at the age of 37. Read's teammate Bonera finished the season ranked second in the final classifications with Yamaha teammates Länsivuori and Agostini coming in third and fourth. Despite only finishing four races all year, Agostini claimed two victories in Austria and the Netherlands.
Read's 1974 championship marked the seventeenth consecutive 500cc title for the MV Agusta team, going back to 1958. It also marked the last world championship for the Italian team as well as the last world championship for a four-stroke machine until the advent of the MotoGP class in 2002. After the death of Count Agusta in February 1971, MV Agusta's focus turned to the aviation industry. The Count's passion for motorcycle racing had been the driving force behind the MV Agusta team, and without his presence, the racing team's importance within the company began to wither.https://www.cycleworld.com/blogs/ask-kevin/mv-agusta-four-stroke-racing-technology-development-history/ What If MV Agusta Had Not Lost Its Leadership in 1971? Cycle World 30 August 2026 Cameron Kevin April 25, 2023 1974 would mark the final world championship in MV Agusta's illustrious history and the team withdrew from Grand Prix racing after the 1975 season.
In the 350cc class, the Yamaha TZ350 dominated so thoroughly that the MV Agusta team chose not to compete for the championship. Agostini won five of the ten rounds to claim his seventh consecutive 350cc World Championship and fourteenth World Championship overall ahead of second place, Dieter Braun. However, Agostini's victory at the Austrian Grand Prix only happened after race leader Chas Mortimer allowed Agostini to pass him for the win. Mortimer also rode a Yamaha and was concerned that the Yamaha factory might deny him support if he defeated their top rider. Agostini's 350 World Championship on the Yamaha marked the first time that a two-stroke powered motorcycle had won the 350 title.
